Ah yes power and SPL ratings are quite a minefield of bull**** :wasntme:
RMS power is the only reliable guide, music power or advertised power usually seems to be around 10x the RMS power. RMS is the only way to compare apples with apples. This applies to speakers and amps!

It's the same with SPL efficiency figures, they should be quoted in DB at 1w/1mtr but are often not quoted that way.

These ratings are important when combining speakers, you need ones with similar efficiency ratings to help keep things simple. That is the advantage of buying splits which are already matched.

Some classics came with Harmon Kardon speakers? I'd certainly give them a fair go before considering replacing them.

Clarion NZ502 flip out screen
12 slimline sub in spot where standard spare wheel is in a custom carpeted fiberglass box

May or may not add speaker to rear LSE door

What are peoples experience with brands to use?
Also is anyone running the Clarion NZ502 with its built in Hema offroad maps? Does it work well?
Anyone upgraded the pillar tweeter when upgrading the fronts and would that mean 3way splits?

Specifically referring to the the "3 ways splits"
Are you referring to split system speakers or 3 way coaxial speakers? There is a big difference. a 3 way split system would consist of 3 individual speakers, While this is possible and I did it in a friends VW golf i have not seen them available.

If you meant 3 way coaxial speakers then i would advise against fitting them to the front. You already have a split system installed, you would be effectively down grading.

If you wanted to use the standard tweeter, which would be fine, and install a normal or max 2 way coaxial speakers that would make more sense, it would probably sound too tinny (too many high frequencies) if you used 3 ways and connected the standard pillar tweeters. Honestly i'd give the standard splits a go before pulling them out ESPECIALLY if you are amping them anyway and ESPECIALLY if they are Harmon Kardon speakers. The reason you have not heard of them is because they are not cheap retail speakers like pioneer, clarion or sony. Save some coin and give them a go before fitting new speakers. You will be surprised at how much an improvement it will make amplifying them and running new wire if you see fit. If you still don't like them, then buy new ones.

All soft dashes came with harman cardon speakers (pretty sure all rangies from then on), the speakers don't run through the head unit, they all run through an amp, its actually a complex system. I need to put the factory sub back in, you notice the difference. Speakers are very clear and work well when up loud.

Now that's an idea... #2 son reckons my sub isn't working... not that you'd really notice with Enya, madrigals or choral music.... unlike the boom-Tissh noise he favours...

I've got a little portable oscilloscope.. may as well see if it is getting signal in/out.

Speakers are good, standard head unit easy to operate... but totally unsatisfactory AM radio. FM isn't much better...

Still have'nt found a car radio as good as our old EJ Holden, "Air Chief" push-button the old fashioned variable inductor tuning. - Could pull in a local (up to 100km) AM station clear-as... Or interstate on a good night. Amazing what good audio came out of a 5x7 oval speaker on top of the dash, driven by a single-ended AD 149. :D

The Good Old Days...

'95 Classic Vogue SE, softdash, with working Air Suspension...and pathetic AM radio...

Anyway, if you're over 50... any extra high frequencies will help make up for age-related hearing loss !
