Haven't had any luck at all getting a recovery hitch long enough.

I'll take a photo of what I did for you .... I just used the standard tongue.

Grabbed a set like these:

Weight Distribution KIT 4 BAR Range 80 KG TO 135 KG 041128 Camec | eBay

I've never like these bars as they can loosen your towball in use by applying rotational forces to the bracket bolted under the tongue.

So what I did was weld on of these to the existing tongue:

I welded it's ball joint to the tongue against the bracket the levelling bars clip into. This prevents the bracket rotating in use and loosening the towball.

This is what I"m towing ... I do have a working load leveller, but I use the distribution bars as I want some of the weight applied back onto the front wheels (that do most of the braking and all of the steering).

It tows nicely with this setup .... But does get blown all over the road ... There is nearly ALWAYS strong gusty winds whenever I need to tow the caravan..... With the sort of sail area I'm towing this will happen regardless of the tow vehicle though.

Thanks but just wanted to know if there was a recovery hitch (long enough) to hook the snatch on to, rather than using the pin.
I'll get one made.
I will use this info however when I hook up my van.

Oh, this is an old thread .... If I was stuck, I'd feed the loop in the snatch strap down into the receiver and use the pitch pin to retain it .....

If your silly with the loads put on the strap ..... I reckon you might bend the pin though (that would then be lots of fun to remove).

I've been tempted to fit a standard towbar rather than the rear step to get around the tongue issues. You can buy a standard towbar for less than $100bucks these days for a disco 1/ rangie classic. They will accept all the standard tongues and recovery hitches.

Roadsafe have a recovery hitch that is long enough

I made my own recovery hitch. Laminated several layers of flat plate together by welding. I am pretty confident I could hang the car off it with no safety concerns.
