    Fuel Tank Issue

    Hi All,
I have an 87 RRC with 3.5 EFI it has a leaking fuel tank. The tank in the car has what appears to be 4 breather tubes. One large that goes back to the filler neck and three small ones that disappear into the RH rear guard.

I have been given another tank from another model but it only has the large breather tube. Can I use this tank and just disconnect the three smaller tubes? Or am I going to stuff something up by doing this ?

The 3 small breather tubes are for sending the fumes to the charcoal canister under the bonnet. Inside the rear guard is a tank with space for some liquid fuel in case of splash or expansion. If you don't connect it your vehicle should run just fine but it will be illegal as far as emissions are concerned. There will have to be another breather connection though or you will generate a vacuum in the tank as you use up fuel.

Also make sure your donor tank is an EFI tank with provision for the fuel pump assembly in the top middle. Carby tanks are very similar looking except for the lack of pump orifice.

Before you do anything check in with your local Land Rover dealer. Some of these cracking fuel tanks are still being covered by warranty/recall regardless of how old the car is. I can't recall which years are covered for this. If yours falls in the range covered then it won't cost you a cent for a new tank and fitting.

Agree. But I think its for the plastic tanks only...
They paid for the replacement tank (new) of my 95 Classic

Story was a manufacturing issue with the mouldings, mainly the breather pipes where they joined or flowed into the top of the tank. Also around the filler neck.

I've noticed a petrol smell around the tank of my '87 Classic and maybe it's the breathers too. Do you know if they were covered by warranty this far back? cheers

After 27 years & not being a recalled item, I doubt it very much.
