Here's the 1/2" spanner. Note how one side has been ground down as well. I copied one I borrowed from a local LR specialist.

Hi All,
I've been in contact with Mike from Allwest Carburator & EFI in Perth.
He believes I have other issues other than the carbies and suggested putting it back together and starting the Rover.
Well while manifold and carbie was off replaced the hydralic lifters to see if I can get the annoying tapet noise fixed.......I did'nt work and I'll need a very simple answer for someone to explain preload .... :(
Anyway .....started Rover and she definately has a misfire or flat spot.
I've been watching YouTube about balancing CD carbies and while I don't have proper balancer they do use a hose to listen to way carbies are sucking adjust a screw to increase the idle on that carbie and it sucks more air......if I understand it right.
My questions is ....I found two adjusting screws low down at each carbie where auto / choke assembly bolts on to carbies. Ones at the front the other at the rear (as carbies are face opposite directions)
1) Are these screws for adjusting the balancing ....the reason I ask is that turning screws either fully in or out don't do anything....
2) I can see the piston on both carbies ....(Aircleaners are still off) the RH Carbie (when standing in front of the car) the piston at idle is raised only 3mm however the LH piston is good 10mm raised at idle....and the smell of fuel is overpowering.
I'm sure (fuel smell) is from the LH Carb as you can see the fuel being sucked into the carbie from the needle.
I've been sitting at my laptop for at least half an hour and I'm still feeling sick from the smell of fuel.
3) What can be causing the piston to be raised so much higher than the RH Side and what can I do to lower it ......when engines shut off the piston drops all the way to the bottom.
As supaquag mentioned I hope its not the cam .....that would be a real bugger ....still I'll deal with the carbies first and work down from there.
All thoughts appreciated,
Cheers,
Baggy
Whatever you decide, Beeutey is moving next door to me not anywhere near you! :D
He could visit ..... there's enough Rovers here in the West he could have a working holiday ....;)
We could club together to get him over for a while!
LIFTER NOISE.
The cam can be checked just using a dial gauge and recording the lift of each CAM lobe ... no need to rip motors apart.
The lifter noise can also be due to a worn rocker ... rather than a lazy lifter or worn cam lobe. I have replaced a couple.
CARBY
Unbalanced .. or badly set up carbies will always result in all the symptoms and flat spots that you are describing.
PM me your phone number
Cheers
Mike
