    Classic Headlight Upgrade

Has anyone got any recommendations as to what to buy regarding upgrading my 94 LSE factory headlights?

I want to remain legal so no HID conversions please. I simply want better - modern comparable - night vision than that currently available from the "one candle power" factory lights currently fitted.

I thought they were just stock standard 7" lights that are available everywhere. Some second hand Hellas would be a good start:

Common 7" Hella H4 Headlamps X2 Suit Classic BMC Vintage Holden Ford SH | eBay

Fit a pair of +50% Halogen globes and a set of headlamp relays to stop the dip switch from failing and you'll see a lot better.

X2. Except I'd get new. $40 to $60 more than the ebay example, but new reflectors etc.

What is that? I've always relayed the headlights on my cars. I just by a roll of heavy'ish wire and a couple of relays and get to work with the soldering iron Costs very little, and often produces huge gains.

A easy check is too put a voltmeter across the headlight globe at idle. Compare the voltage there too the battery voltage (with the engine running). If the voltage is the same, the wiring is already good enough. If it's not, you'll gain a lot of brightness. It's amazing the difference even 1volt will make to the headlight brightness

IF you've properly cleaned the glass, silvering still shiny... put a decent relay system in.... got quality, (brand-name) globes in them...and are still Not Happy, AND if you have money to burn...

Then go for some Hella or Narva 7" 'Free-Form" inserts. These are the stripey looking reflectors with clear glass/Polycarbonate fronts.

You get what you pay for, so evil bay chinee cheapies under $60 a pair might not be all that great. - 'Where' the light goes and does NOT go is just as important... more so IMHO... as how bright they seem.

There are two kinds of light - the glow that illumines, and the glare that obscures. ~James Thurber

Regarding globes. I've found the +50% and +90% and +whatever%s... have a shrter life than 'standard' or +30% ones. Might just be me, but they're so annoying to change that I prefer to 'NOT' have to replace them too often.
Bear in mind that a good film of dust on the lens reduces light output by a whopping 50%, and that's about the best differance the human eye can perceive.... which is another way of saying that your $$$ Plus 50% lamps just lightened your wallet more than the road...

Hope that.... casts some light on the subject...

I have new H4 lamps and fitted (with relays) 90/130 globes, had it like this for well over 20 years now and all still good apart from the odd globe going open cct every 4 of 5 years, light output is good but I also have 130 watt sealed beam spotties that I bought in 1983, you cant get the fully chromed housings anymore. These have been on 3 rangerovers I have owned....

Agree with all on the wiring upgrade.

I rate these headlights Free-form Headlight Inserts - Xray Vision

Have also used led headlights like Welcome to SIRIUS

But had some reliability issues and they make car look suspicious to boys in blue

I have 55/60 H4 Narva +50% in a pair of "Carello"assymetric lens and are more than happy, legal and they will make the blue/white light Toyos etc. dip when I flash them I run my lights through a "New Era"relay (Aust. made)

They are a double fused unit about the size of a cigarette packet, about $65 from memory, available through Repco or Ashdown neater than 2 Hella ones

    cheers
