IMHO the standard front springs at 133Lb per inch are really too soft for Australian roads.
The Land Rover heavy duty package for RRCs was to fit the rear springs on the front (at 160Lb per inch that is 10% heavier), and fit springs the same as LRA orange on the rear which are 180Lb per inch also 10% heavier . This gives about a 2 inch lift but a great ride when mated to a Hydromat.

The BEST shocks for ride are the OEM shocks or Boge . Both are oil only not gas. Virtually all other shocks will add stiffness and/or harshness.

I am sure you will be happy with that ride combination and be grateful when the thing doesn't bottom on every pothole as it will with the stock front springs.

In my old 1988 Hiline I fitter Delphi De Carbon shocks DA4181
They are absolutely fantastic and work well on the Defenders as well.
When my new 1986 RRC is due for new shocks I will tray to get them again.

Price is still the same as Jack Africa paid over a year ago - $400 to reco your own unit. Shipping at your expense. I'll send mine off after Melrose which is when I'll be getting stuck back into the Rangie.

I just rang them, and price for my 1991 (blue) boge unit was $450. I think might be best to ring and confirm before sending up.

Also, he said to take the bracket off the top to reduce shipping weight / dimensions if possible.

Ok, but they confirmed my vehicle was an 85 model and quoted $400 to me. I'll send them a copy of the quote with the package.;)

Has anyone tried to rebuild it themselves. It's probably just a bunch of "O"rings and some oil and your done. After all if it's only $400 I imagine it's all labour cost.

Nivomat and Hydromat same same except Nivomat usually one per wheel and sometimes has a spring to make a strut.

I can deal with that. I regass citroen suspension spheres myself that are filled to 75bar ( 1100psi ). I reckon we could soon sort something out with regards to fixing them if you found an exploded diagram of how it worked, and where the pressure is (we'd need to safely release it prior to changing any seals).
