Something weird was going on with the photo uploads so I will try again in this post. I have also shown a close up of the top mount. The picture with the tailgate half open shows the balance point for the tailgate. Push down below this position and the tailgate starts shutting itself. Lift up beyond this positioned it opens up fully. The thumb nails don't seem to always show the actual picture but I think the links still work. Let me know if they don't

If new catches are popping it is usually because they are not adjusted properly.
Now let me remember this.
The adjustment on the catches is by the thread on the end of the rod that goes to the centre lock.
You have to make sure that the locks are fully closed when the tailgate button is up fully, so you adjust the locks so that they don't "pop" until the button is nearly fully pressed.
Also the pins for the locks are adjustable by loosening the big Phillips heads and tapping with a hammer.
You have to not make them too tight against the rubbers or you will bend the centre of tailgate in by slamming it , unless you use one hand on each of the corners.
After I put a new rubber on mine , it never popped open.

Just been through the same experience after rebuilding my upper tailgate frame and fitting new rubber (the one around the whole upper/lower tailgate aperture) and new latches and striker plates. Could barely get it to shut let alone latch until I backed off the nyloc nuts under the roof lining that attach the upper tailgate hinges, allowing the whole window to sit flat on the new thicker rubber. Had striker plates positioned max to the rear and still had popping latches over any kind of bump (never happened before with the old rubber and latches).
Finally now getting it to shut and stay shut (almost all the time) by backing the latch adjusting rods right off as it seems that flexing of the body and tailgate will pull on the rods enough to trip the latches if the rods are adjusted too fine.
I think PhillipA is exactly right about setting the rods to actuate when the button is fully depressed.
