    Cool Cabin Air snorkel?

    G'day all

So while I wait for the new few weeks to go past - I have been thinking about all things RRC again and getting so of my gear ready for a new beast to come my way.
Including pulling out a roof console that I bought years ago - but ended up with a sunroof rangie and never used it!

One of the things I wanted to do was to add a second snorkel for cabin air intake. Reason? When I did this river crossing in my RRC with the 4.6lt beast.. 010.jpg

The water that come over the bonnet pushed open the air intake vent and water poured in behind the dash. Wasn't the best having a heap of water on the floor with the ECU still not relocated lol

So this is why I wanted to add the second snorkel, should I enter some real deep hole in a river or something and have water come over the bonnet. However I am having issues finding any pictures of how to get in to the decker panel and connect up some pipe work for cabin air.
I also thought I would throw the idea on here since I am sure someone would have thought about this before me and to gather ideas for such a setup.

    Many thanks in advance!!

lol while it might look like it from that shot - no - it just went up the wind screen a fair bit as you can see.
It was a hole at the entry to that crossing then no higher then the tires.

I'm a bit confused. The decker panel has drain holes for heavy rain and if the air vents had been closed (i.e. aircon off, fan off, fresh air vent closed) I would have thought no water would have made it's way in behind the dash. I could envisage a situation where the water pressure was so great it forced it's way in past the closed vent, but I wouldn't have thought a momentary dip would have been a problem. But, then again, I wasn't there!
Can you remember if your vent was closed or not?

    Hi ya,

Yeah we made sure we closed it before we made the crossing. We were with out mates, Pootrol and landcruisers which sat a little higher than the rangie at the time with 2.5" lift and 265/75/16's on. They had all crossed apart from us.
I fitted a factory land rover bra for water crossings as well as I knew it was going to deep for the first part. WD40'd the dizzy etc.
I didn't gun it in, if anything I was a little slow on entry. Made it through no problems... apart from the water that poured in from behind the radio. My girl was in the passenger seat and remembers leaning forward to close it again. It was the only time I had it happen mind you.

But then, having the air in take where it is when you are in a group, we found the cabin would get full of dust. So thats another reason for it. Could fit a prefilter for it as well.

The time honoured way of fixing this is to stick some duct tape over the intake grille.

While you are at it if the water is that deep, you should stick it all around the bonnet and on the bottoms of the doors.
I have driven in over a metre of water successfully doing the above with no snorkel.

Some of the others in our convoy on that day didn't do the duct tape thing and ended up with flooded stereos and the one memorable 91 which ended up with a gutful and we had to take out the ECU and dry it with an air inflator and Coleman lamp and it actually went OK after with the plugs out etc as well. We got home late that night.

    Regards Philip A

    Hello Mr Philip,
I honestly had wondered if that would work... but thought it wouldn't have - what do ya know ay? haha
Thats something I'll keep in mind next time I have a crossing like that. I also pulled the ECU and dried it out. Lucky the radio was fine

One thing... bottom of the doors?

But still... having duel snorkels on a rangie with full roof racks just looks mean - better if the second snorkel has a use such as clean cabin air
Looking at the service manual I can see how to get the decker panel open now and get to where that air intake is, I just have to make up a good water tight connection for it somehow. Thats something I'll sort out later on, but still keen to see if anyone else has done it and any tips they can offer.

For those whom know Vic... this was south of Snake Edwards track crossing the Goulburn river, south of Kevington.

    Hi,
in chasing the source of hot air coming through the air vents, I found a very poorly designed connection between the air intake in the mud guard and the heater control box. They only sort of point in the right direction, and had only just retained a flimsy rim of feeble foam plastic that was supposed to be a gasket.

I would predict that this would be a highly likely source of water ingress to the cabin, and should be checked if you want to do any water crossings.

    Cheers

AFAIK there is no air intake in the mudguard on an RRC , only the Decker panel . I think the poster is talking a Defender?
