Yep.. The water bottle.. Grrrrr 🤬
Hi All,
I purchased a seal-kit for the power steering box, with the thought that when I send the car off for a RWC - I would ask the mechanic to fit the kit, as it's above my skills.
On the weekend (Dave) BlkKnight came over and inspected the power steering box, and suggested that the box was leaking from the top - which indicated problems with the bearings and that I would need a new or rebuilt power steering box.
Luckily for me - I just happened to have a second hand power steering box sitting on the shelf (it came with my 101, was never used but the condition was unknown).
So:
1) Dave stripped down the spare box and gave it a complete inspection.
2) Cleaned-up some of the services
3) Re-Assembled the box - with replacing all of the seals
I:
1) Sanded back the pitman arm & steering box
2) Masked it up
3) Painted them - first coat.
Here are some pictures - before:

The next steps are:
* Check my painting - make sure that I haven't missed any bits
* Second Coat
* Remove old steering box (I'm guessing that is going to be fun - NOT)
* Install new replacement steering box
Meanwhile the headlining & sun visors are being dropped off for recovery in the next few days...
Fingers crossed I might just make the dead line...
Cheers,
GG.
Hi GG,
Was there any reason you didn't replace the Pitman Arm ball joint? did it appear sloppy at all?
I'm asking because I've got lots of slack in the my steering and I'm not sure which job to do first, the steering box or the pitman arm ball joint - I'm not really looking forward to either job given my lack of correct tools (and knowledge) and i've read they are both diffucult jobs!
Tim.
Hi Tim,
There didn't appear to be any slack in the ball joint - in fact it was quite tight. I will replace the boot, and re-grease - but it looked okay to me...
I am hoping to change over the steering box sometime late next week... Fingers crossed!
Cheers,
GG.
Hi All,
Quite a bit of work done over the weekend, in fact I spent most of the weekend working on the Range Rover...
I removed all of the sill strips so that I could give them a polish, and also remove the old sound deadening & carpet:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/566.jpg
And here is an example of one of them after I polished it:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/567.jpg
Here is some of the crappy old carpet - it was smelly, damp, had rust stains - time for the bin:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/569.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/570.jpg
I found some surface rust in both the passenger and drivers foot wells - so I sanded the surface rust back as best I could, and then treated it with a rust converter paint:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/571.jpg
And then painted it with some red rust paint - I didn't care that it wasn't a perfect colour match, because it is going to be covered up by sound deadening anyway...

Here is the sound deadening - on the passenger side:

Here is the sound deadening - on the drivers side:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/574.jpg
Next - re-install the sill covers and new carpet matts installed - passenger side, drivers side, rear seat:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/578.jpg
Next - fix the centre arm rest... The screws were missing entirely, I also needed to use longer screws because of wear and tear. All fixed now:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/579.jpg
Dash Matt installed - it came with Velcro strips that were next to useless, so I also added some double-sided tape. Time will tell how well it works:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/580.jpg
Next - I found a 20cm hole in the floor, roughly under the drivers seat. Cleaned-up the hole, cut a plate and pop-riveted it on:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/582.jpg
I also re-installed the lower dash panel & drivers side kick plate.
Last jobs before RWC:
* Re-install head lining (once I pick it up from the trimmer)
* Fashion a battery clamp
* Replace some light bulbs on the drivers side rear
* Steering box replacement.
Getting there....
Cheers,
GG.
Coming along nicely - where did you obtain the new matts? Fleabay?
Yep - $135 from memory. They aren't perfect (they don't have the holes like the originals, and they are not a perfect fit compared to the originals - but for $135, I'm happy).
Cheers,
GG.
PS - There is a guy on here selling complete carpet sets, much better quality - but at this point in time it's nothing that I need to do...
"Big Red" is now ready for a RWC... Another big weekend (Friday night, Saturday & Sunday) and he's ready... Jobs done over the weekend include (from memory anyway, it was a bit of a blur):
Fabricate, paint & install a battery bracket:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/934.jpg
Install the new head lining, Jesus handles, Sun Visors, Interior Lights & Covers and Speakers:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...018/04/936.jpg
No pictures of the below:
Install reconditioned steering box (twice, it's a long story but it's all adjusted up now)
Replace Spark Plugs
Replace HTC Leads
Replace Oil Filter
Drain/Flush Engine Oil
Clean Oil Cap (came up rather well)
BlkKnight helped with all of the mechanical stuff - I did all of the cosmetic stuff.
Ringing the mechanic today to book it in for a RWC... [thumbsupbig]
Cheers,
GG.
Hi All,
So "Big Red" is back from the local mechanic, and I now have a RWC in hand... What did he initially fail it on?
* Speedo - I knew that the speedo was a little suspect, because when you started the car in park the speedo would show 20kmh while stationary... However once you got over 60 - the speedo seemed to work okay.. And it's a Landy - so who needs a speedo? Well apparently I do for the RWC! I managed to source a second hand instrument binnacle from Ebay, and got it installed. The good news is - I now have a tacho as well.. The tacho in my original instrument binnacle didn't work, so 2 birds fixed with one stone!
* Passenger door - the passenger door was damaged, and opened correctly (no sagging), so I thought that it would pass the RWC. However I hadn't noticed that the door did have a tear in it - and the mechanic knocked that back. I had bought a 2nd hand door (wrong colour), and was always going to install that later... So the door was painted and installed.
Here is a picture of the car when I inspected it:

Painting the spare door:

The car needs another good clean & polish, but here she is:

In this pic the colour match looks poor, but interestingly in real life it looks closer:

Anyway - I can't wait to get the club permit and start using it on the weekend.
Cheers,
GG.
