Oops I did it again... New Project

Hi All,

So I've been trying to do a little bit each night - no huge jobs, but they all add up.

You will remember that the front looked like this - I'm talking specifically about the broken indicator, and dirt around the head light recess:

I removed the broken indicator - but it took quite some time to remove the glue from the panel... I also polished the area thoroughly - and I am very happy with the results. In the below photo I have not polished the bonnet edge, nor have I polished the entire panel - just the area around the blinker.

I decided that even though nobody will ever see the area behind/around the headlight, that I'd give that a quick clean also...

Again - this is never going to be a concourse car, but it is going to be a very tidy run-around car... SWMBO even said: "wow - it's really taking shape, maybe I shouldn't drive it!"

On another note - and this relates to the argument "do I buy parts from overseas OR locally"... I had purchased a lot of parts locally, but also a few from overseas.. I went to fit some of the overseas parts the other day - and they don't fit at all. I neded up taking the old parts & the OS parts into Dave from British Car Components in North Melbourne - we compared the parts and put simply, I've been sent the wrong parts from OS. I've ordered replacement parts from Dave and will have them today - now that's what I call SERVICE. I double checked my original order with the original supplier - and they have not supplied what I ordered. Sure I might have saved a few dollars by ordering OS, but the parts are wrong which is causing a delay... From now on - unless there is a huge cost saving, I'm going to buy local. I can't thank Dave enough for his help & prompt service. [thumbsupbig]

A few small jobs done last night:

I am replacing the front wiper arms/blades with new units, but apparently the rear wiper arm is NLA - so I sanded it back and painted it. While I was at it - I also painted the 3 x nuts that hold the wiper arms on.

Also, the top brackets that hold on the gas struts for my tailgate are missing. I sourced the brackets from a wrecker, sanded them back and painted them.

(The missing or damaged gas strut brackets seems to be an issue - my other Range Rover has home made brackets on it, so those must have broken at some stage also - a design flaw I guess)

And more polishing. To be honest the photograph makes it look better than it is - but you get the idea. I have polished everything forward of the windscreen in this photo. You can see that the drivers door is lighter compared to the bonnet/front guard.

Or they started the process of reversing the pins and rams to stop the rear top section self opening all the time??

I do need to change the springs, brake drums and shoes, fit up the overdrive,,,, plus some other things that need attention

Would all be rather easily achieved with a hoist [bigwhistle][biggrin]

You have to love the way old acrylic laquer shines back up. You have to keep at it sadly otherwise it turns chalking again. You can't do that with the modern 2packs paints as the clear starts pealing off in sheets.

What sort of black did you use on the front bumper :confused: I have had good luck in the past with priming them and painting them satin black ( or even using the plastic dyes).

On the Rangey here I just pulled the plastic off though. I figured it should look old and metal not modern and plasticky :D

Hi Shane,

The metal bumper - I haven't painted, I just washed it and gave it a cut & polish.

The plastic bumper & grill - I used a product caled: "Dupli-Color Trim & Bumper Paint". It's in a spray can and the blurb says:

Looking to renew and protect weathered or discoloured bumpers, mouldings and rubber strips? Dupli-Color Bumper Coating offers a protective coating, solid colour and superior adhesion to thermoplastic rubber and polyurethane bumpers without flaking, chipping or peeling.

• Provides a uniform solid color

Only time will tell how well it responds to UV...

PS - I washed the plastic, dried it, and the scotch brighted it to roughen it up before I painted it (multiple coats). I didn't use a primer because I figured that the surface was already "rough"...
