When you said 'thump' I thought you meant a bad thump. The clutch clicks in no dramas, there's nothing wrong with that. As I said, there's a wire to the relay whose other end is a mystery to me, the clutches non operation has nothing to do with a defective clutch. The lack of cold will no doubt be lack of gas in the system.

I got the seat belt from a Wrecking Notice here on AULRO - there is a guy in Hastings (Vic) wrecking a '93 RRC.. But as I snapped it off him - I doubt that he has another one..

I recommend that you try a wrecker. There are some Land Rover specific wreckers out there:

Oh this is an easy fix then.... Take a piccie of it and I'll tell you where that wire goes on the '92 model here. The sensible way to wire the compressor clutch is through the switching contact inside the relay back to a grunty 12volt source. The actual side of the relay the drives the switching contact, should have 12volts back to the thermister in the evaporator, however it's earth wire will run through through the receiver drier switch then to earth. So if the pressure contact in the receiver drier opens, the earth to the compressor relay will be interrupted, shutting off the compressor.

This way you get power to the compressor and interruption for fault conditions using just one relay.

Already explained which wire - I can make it work easily but I’d prefer to know where this wire comes from in the loom. It’s the low side (negative) supply to the coil of the clutch relay - it doesn’t just run to a ground, it appears to be switched from elsewhere. It’s Grey I think but can’t recall the trace colour. Positive to the clutch coil comes from the receiver drier switch, main power feed into relay comes from the correct fuse which is fine and the output obviously goes to the clutch. Everything but that ground wire is working correctly. I can’t just ground it as then the only thing that will stop the clutch from engaging is the switch in the receiver dryer. I’m guessing some part of the AC on/off system switches it, but everything else works properly when the AC is switched on - condenser fans run fine and the idle up on the engine works well too.
