    Scuttle panel

    HI guys,

I damaged quite a bit of paint around the hinge area trying to get the scuttle off. What genius decided to fit big springs to the hinges. Can anyone think of a rreason that I can't just remove those springs and throw them away ? If I repair and respray the scuttle .... I'll damage the hell out of the finish trying to refit it!

BTW: I'm learning all the bits everyone else learns. If you don't remove the 'Y" pipes, those bastard things wedge and prevent the motor coming out in 101 ways ... and you can't get the bloody things off unless you put the engine back down where it belongs.. Also if you have the engine half way out ..... and swinging for the crane ........ It is about now you will realise you cna't unplug the engine harness at the back ............... Guess how hard it is to unplug and feed out 8 injector and 5 sensor wiring plugs .... without removing the intake because you have the engine crane leveller covering it.

Almost nothing is hard to do once you've leaned the easy way. The EFI harness for example has a couple of biggish plugs under the dash and seat and you can remove the harness through the firewall with the engine. Bonnet hinges can be tied down with wire.

Yeah I slide some short lengths of metal over them and used a couple of small ratchet straps to hold them down. I still can't see I'd ever refit a painted scuttle panel without scratching the hell out of it ....... One way to find out I guess The springs will just remove readily looking at them either way.

It didn't even occur to me to try and remove the harnesses from the car! Removing the bonnet closing panel sure did making getting the motor out easy!

This is what I'm looking at.

The car is currently up waiting at the local smash repairs for my insurance assessor to look at the photos. As you can see, it needs a bonnet, front clip, front guard, bumper, bullbar, grill, light, front guard... both doors are dented, the scuttle is damaged, the rear quarter is dented.

So I need to decide what to do. There isn't a snowmans chance in hell it'll be repaired for me ( waaaaaaayyyyyy more than $3k in damage. just to repaint the panels if they were no damaged would cost more). The good new is 95% of the damage is to bolt ons .... so given a day I could bolt on unbent metal...... but I need to paint it.

This is the other car I have. I just whipped its driveline out ( it was already in many pieces ... so only took a couple of hours). Then spent a couple of hours giving it a good clean.

So I even unbolt the panels from this and move it to the other car .............................. Or simply jack the body up and move it over..... I need to decide which way to go. I know, you think this one looks great in the photos .... Just move it over ....

No matter which way I go about this ........... I'm going to have to paint the entire thing. This is what happened when I pressure washed the parts car

Ignore that number plate. Its the original from my Citroen CX ( that has been moved to a club permit). This car sits at the end of the drive under the carport. I want anyone driving past to assume this is the blue 4wd they see driving in and out of the place ......................... So someone is currently home. so I stuck a numberplate on it so it looks like its a registered driver (yeah, registered driver with no 'cv joint or transfer case in it ).

Anyway, the pressure washer blasted the paint off back to what is either bog or spray putty ................. with top coat straight over it. So I'm painting even if I try to use this body..... I then went over the car, its quite straight ... but I marked at least five areas that will need repair on pretty much every panel (sure not noticeable now, but if I go to all the effort of putting shiny top coat on it ............... and don't fix all of the marks .... it'll **** me off everytime I look at the car for the next 10years and I'l think "WTF didn't you just spend a day and fix them before spraying shiny paint on ... ".

Every single panel also shows evidence of delaminating clear. So I'm looking at a full respray, not matter which body I use.

I'm betting both scuttles are like this....

This has all been cleaned.... it was full of crap.

It probably looks ok in the piccies ........................... but check this out.

    Scuttle panel-20180811_180559.jpg

I have sat a lead light inside the scuttle. See the rust holes. I might just slot this (to remove the rusty metal)... but leave the hole there so the water can drain. It appears there is no drain holes other than the very ends of the scuttle. So water will sit in here "forver", especially once it fills with pine needles and leaves. How have other poeple repaired there scuttles ? (you can't see the rust until you remove the air conditioner lines)

As suggested here I drilled and removed the bonnet catch panel to get the driveline out intact.... what a brilliant idea!

I blocked off the fresh air intake on the scuttle. I figure if using a/c then it’s recirc if I need fresh then open windowScuttle panel. It looks stock but is blanked off. To stop the water etc going in. Mine has two drain holes one either side.

I won't be able to stop the water getting into this area. I'm betting any car that has been parked under trees at any point in its life will be rusty here. You see any leaves or crap that get in there will "dam" the water .... especially if the car is parked for any length of time without moving. I foudn the drains at the very ends .... but these would be easily blocked (or dammed off so you have a puddle in the middle).
