    slipped liner ?

What year did the slipped liner first appear. I thought it was around 1990. My 86 Rangie should be OK. Something has gone wrong with it, oil is clear and the water looks OK. Running rough and sounds like a constant whirring sound. When I started it, it sounded like a carburettor back firing. I know its fuel injected.

If the engine is original it will be the first of the injected 3.5's and a build date later in the year as 86 is when they crossed over from Carbys to EFI. If this is the case, then they don't have liners to slip and are far more tolerant of overheating than the 3.9 these were introduced in and a better engine IMO.

As for the cause of the issues - if it's backfired the flapper could be damaged in it - fairly common problem from what I'm told. These early EFI systems are not the greatest and not sure what spare parts are like to get to be honest. What caused the backfire could be a separate issue which may also need looking at.

I'm no expert on these early EFI's as my 86 is the last of the Carbys, but I stuck a 3.9 with 14CUX EFI in it anyway, so skipped all the fun of the older stuff. Have fluffed around with a couple but not in a major way. Hopefully there are others here that are more conversant with these units.

Slipped liners are a possibility from the earliest LRV8, although much more likely in the bigger bore motors like the 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6. They usually don't affect the running and don't start making a noise until the engine is warmed up.

As for the diagnosis, first find out which cylinder is misfiring, remove the plugs and have a look at them, or remove the plug boots and short one cylinder at a time. "Constant whirring noise" could be anything, move your head around the engine bay to better pinpoint the source of the noise. A piece of hose can be used as a listening aid.

I always think the worst. Turns out it was the hose that connects to the EFI. The wirring sound was the air from the hose. She is back running sweet as.
