    Gday All,

If anyone is interested I have found what seems to be the Lucas 65 amp version of my alternator. I am going to see if there is 1 in Darwin tomorrow at Ashdowns but according to their catalog this alternator is the same as whats on my vehicle.

Ashdown number is LXA 119 - suits a 1.6 ltr ford escort MK 2
    Autobarn number is SP95030

pics and measurements are the same , so hopefully there is 1 in Darwin that I can check out in the flesh.

    Cheers Ean

Just an FYI(may or may not help)

Many moons ago I had my 79 RRC, and after changing the Lucas alternator eveyr year or so, I got fed up.
Also, I fitted twin thermo fans, and 130w spotties(plus the 100w high beams) and on a warm night with everything lit up, battery drain was very severe with only 65Amps from the alternator.

So the last time the Lucas failed on me, I got a friend sparky to get me something better.
I'm sure he got me a Bosch that fitted a 280ZX(maybe) .. and it was almost a direct fit for the Lucas.
I recall that the Bosch was 80amps, which helped too.

Having spotted the LXA119 model now, it appears for all intents and purposes identical to the Lucas alternator that failed(maybe 30 odd years ago).

I'd kept the Lucas it in a storage box totally forgotten till a little while back.
Being a Lucas, it still doesn't' work, and will never work!

Anyhow, just a heads up that there are better alternators out there that may last a lot longer ..
That Bosch outlasted the rest of the car .. even tho the car lasted quite some time(in klm terms .. ~400K klms).

    Interesting comments.

I have a 55amp Bosch alt in my pos that could well have done 300,000kms or more, some of it before I owned it.

Has just had new bearings put in, prior to that 3 sets of brushes in my ownership, but before I owned it ....dunno.

The only time I got the warning light to slightly glow was one warm rainy night going from Warrnambool to the Grampians loaded to the gunwhales, both thermos on, heater fan on (demist), wipers on, high beam and spots on (all hid then) and the stereo going.

    cheers, DL

On my '79, I had the four dash instruments.
Long ago now, can't recall them all, but one was oil temp, and the next across was ammeter(Amps)
Ammeter showed -ve amps with all the power used with that old alternator.

Thermo fans were about 20-30 amps, head/spot lights came in at 460w, so near on 40 amps. I had a small thermoelectric fridge cooler .. about 5 amps.
Other lights tail/park plus whatever else the engine required .. added up to over 65 amps.

Always fridge was the first thing to disconnect, then if needed(usually was) the spotties. Let the battery recover and start the process all over again a few hours later.

dash light never glowed(unless it was so dim I didn't notice it). The Ammeter was always the hint that the alternator was struggling.

Now you got me racking my brains out trying to remember the far left gauge. I remember one was the clock .. but for the life of me can't think of the other gauge now.
possibly oil pressure .. just can't remember.

    Yeah, oil pressure guage.

I only post stuff because of all the mythology that crops up from people who've never done it.

Your info is interesting and very valid.

Ammeters use a fair bit of current (according to my long deceased grandfather who knew ****loads), I'm using a voltmeter in my pos that has a 74 dash.

Thermos in your case seem to be drawing a bit too much (no info on what sort), heads and spots about right for incandescent globes, can't give a call on the fridge unless it was 80l full of warm VB.

    cheers, DL

Fitted an OEX brand - LXA 119 , bolted straight up and away she went. charge at 13.9V when running and the Rangie is back now being the daily driver.

OEX Brand LXA 121 is 80amp but you need to put a spacer in the base as its about 4mm narrower than the base on the original , but the rest is the same except the price as the LXA 121 fits some Cat engines so it jumps up about $70 .

    Cheers Ean
