    Low comp is 2 BTDC
    Hi comp is 4 BTDC

But we know they can go up to around 10 BDTC ok particularly on higher octane fuel.

If you've set the static timing manually (after TDC on compression stroke #1), what about the diaphragm in the vacuum advance?

Lucas ignition module or the invaluable BIM024-Beeutey conversion?

blocked fuel filter or suspect pump? I reckon mine has a 1/2 dead fuel pump as it'll only run ok on petrol if you used hardly any throttle. It leans out and dies on petrol mostly. The fact it runs perfectly on LPG rules out the ignition side of things

Some days it is ok on petrol, which leads me to believe the pump is intermittently working "ok". I'm currently trying to drive it until the tank runs dry (then I will replace the fuel pump and filter). The plastic tanks don't have a drain plug on them.

    Thanks for the replies.

Some more info is starts fine and idles great. Revs fine with no load/not in gear. In gear it runs nice up to about 2000rpm and feels lacking in power. If you push throttle to kick back gear it revs but all noise. Splatters and back fires into exhaust after that or any incline were you need to give more throttle. Black discharge from exhaust but no smoke.

Could also check it dose not have too much back pressure in the exhaust. That will cause these symptoms.

If it is firing back into the exhaust the ignition is too retarded.

What exhaust do you have for starters? Stock mufflers or high flow or none?
