    Coolant Level Sensor Test

    Car is a 92 classic

I've got an issue with the low coolant warning light being constantly on.

    Coolant levels are fine.

Is there any way to test if the sensor in the expansion tank is the issue?

so far, I've tested by tying the float in the raised position, but this doesn't make the light go off.

    Thanks in advance.

You could use an ohm meter and move the float to see if it has an effect or change in ohms. Chances are it has failed. Last time I checked they were about $30.

Left field though; the light on mine flashes even though the level sensor tested ok. There is a power transformer or reducer on the back of the instrument display that is in the circuit that I am very sure is faulty, but can't for the life of me find a replacement. That is also somewhere else to check.

The sender is just a reed switch, however there is a difference that I will try to explain and remember.

AFAIR from ten years ago the switch is positive when inactive and open circuit when active ( water low), which is the opposite of most reed switches.
The display is controlled by a sub processor at the back of the dash which converts that to light on when the reed switch is low so it is not a simple relay.

If I take both leads off the sensor (open circuit) should that cause the dash light to turn off?
