You could use an ohm meter and move the float to see if it has an effect or change in ohms. Chances are it has failed. Last time I checked they were about $30.
Left field though; the light on mine flashes even though the level sensor tested ok. There is a power transformer or reducer on the back of the instrument display that is in the circuit that I am very sure is faulty, but can't for the life of me find a replacement. That is also somewhere else to check.
