The idea is to remain as objective as possible, and not be swayed by the sentimental attachment.

The issue is that owners DO become attached, they DO spend more money (over-capitalize) and they almost invariably DO have a false impression of the vehicles real value - because they have spent hand-over-fist trying to keep it alive.

The original point isn't lost on anyone, it's just a simple case of justifying why money was spent.

The underlying reason remains the same - we all have developed a semi-symbiotic relationship - which is to say the parasitic portion (aka money) is justified by the return (reliability, use, enjoyment) on the injection of funds.

And that is why the question in the OP remains relevant.....

Well then, being as objective as possible in regards to the original question (is it 'When do YOU call it a day?' or is it 'Would you buy one knowing you would spend over $20,000 to have a roadworthy and reliable vehicle?') -

I'll call it a day if I find out I'm going to die the next day.

    ~and~

No I wouldn't because I dare say that myself and the majority of the people reading this would be able to do 90% of the work required to achieve the roadworthy and reliable vehicle status by themselves and not have to spend anywhere near $20,000.

You could say that a similar sentimental value is placed upon something like a 80/100 series LC or GQ/GU Patrol, by someone who would be more likely to spend $20,000 to keep an aging 4WD roadworthy, if only because their neighbour or their mate said that a Land Cruiser or Patrol is unbreakable and the most amazing vehicle ever built (hence they thought they wouldn't ever need to pay someone else to maintain/repair anything besides normal servicing) which is why they still have strong resale values. They don't need to have the sentimental attachment to their vehicle they just need to be able to have a way of showing everyone else that they have a 4WD.

I have literally seen a GU patrol owner park next to another GU patrol which was the same colour with the same aftermarket wheels and the same snorkel and the same factory bullbar and the same spotlights as his, in an almost empty Bunnings car park. He exited his Patrol, having a good look at the strangers Patrol, before walking off. The stranger came to his car, paid no attention whatsoever to the almost identical Patrol that had appeared next to his car, before he just drove off and presumably had no recollection of the event even 2 minutes later.

But I have personally seen a Stage 1 transplanted onto a D1 chassis and parked next to it deliberately and ended up having a 20 minute or so conversation with the owner/builder of said Stage 1 because we both knew something about each others vehicle.

Anyway, I must admit I'm still having a difficult time understanding what is relevant in any of this.

What are you going to do with your D2? or perhaps I should rephrase that to:

What would you replace the D2 with???

That's actually a really tough dilemma if you are talking about 'replacement'.
If you were moving away from 4x4's entirely then it's a lot easier, but the choice is enormous and hence becomes equally difficult.

Well the question can be answered by your answer can't it?

    It's actually easy...

If the RRS can do everything you use the D2 for, then it's easy. Sell the D2.

If the D2 can do something the RRS cannot, then perhaps sell the RRS instead.

If you are afraid of scratching the RRS by using it offroad, then you should sell it.

Anyway a bloody excellent read & full of interest.

    Thanks fellas.

D2 is manual and has long range fuel tank.
RRS is newer and a bit more fuel efficient (not a huge deal)

i rarely go 4wd'ing now days. in SA so many places have been closed.
