Just worked out the fuel consumption for my Defender towing the camper trailer for 950 kilometres from Sydney to Brisbane last week - 12 l/100 kms.

The Hi-clones are good, just make sure you get the new design, the other thing that most owners forget, and on a car that age they would be needing replacement, is the muffler bearings, no one ever changes them.

I find a chrome dipstick to be a great advantage for improving fuel consumption. Fuel consumption

dont forget the fuel polerisor, the gen 3 turbo encabulator upgrade and to change the blinker fluid, the addidional current draw of the electrical system as this runs low puts load on the alternator which you not only pay for at the tank in terms of parasitic draw but lowers the operating voltages of the ECU which then upsets the fuel balance as 1. the pump runs slower so the Mechanical FPR closes up a little putting load on the pump and making the injectors cycle for longer dumping more fuel to try and get the revs up to meet the driver demand (and its open loop in OEM format so No O2 sensors in the exhaust to tell it its running rich) and it causes the IAC to sit wrong upsetting the stoichiometric ratio at low RPMS. (again open loop so it cant tell its running rich)

And that many KM's it'll have a worn cam so its not going to be breathing right.

Thanks. Good advice. I might also polish the roof rack and oil the harmonic balancer. I'm also going to put my phone bubble level on the roof and adjust the tyre pressures to ensure the vehicle is totally horizontal - it could only help. Do you think polishing the wipers could improve fuel consumption?

Absolutely. A high polish will encourage a smooth laminar flow of air across the wipers which will reduce the drag coefficient which in turn will reduce fuel consumption.

Yes, a high laminar flow is so important when you're driving a brick like a Defender. Fuel consumption
    I polished the bullbar too!
I wonder if having wider tyres increases fuel consumption.

The only way to improve the fuel economy in a land rover is to have a category 5 tropical cyclone tailwind.

She seemed a bit better on fuel the last days but I won’t have to worry about it for a bit as the fuel pump has tapped out haha
