    Hi All,

May seem like a dumb question but how do you read the odometer reading on an early classic (1981)

Attached is a photo ... am I reading it correct 87244000 ... that's not 8 million 724 thousand ..... nah can't be .....or should that read 872,440 Klms

Why the 000's on the top or was that an english thing ....

Top one would be your trip meter, bottom one is the odometer.

The odometer doesn’t show the 1/10ths of Km so it show 87’244km.
How many times it been “around” would have to be a guess. It may be 3 times so add 300’000?

The top as mentioned is a trip meter with the yellow dial reading in 100mtr increments.
    Cheers, Kyle

Agreed. Don't do it on ANY speedo. You will strip the odometer gears or dislodge them from the shaft.

I have repaired many VDO odometer gears on Mercedes, simply because owners are lazy/ignorant/both.

After about 20 years the plastic disintegrates due to the grease used. Often it softens gears and turns them to rubbery goopy mess, or the gears shrink and split on the shaft, allowing them to freewheel.

It's not a straightforward job to fix, requires a degree of delicacy and if the gears are soft, a new cassette is required.

If you want to fix one yourself.... I can recommend Odometer Gears as a source of parts.
