95 RRC LSE EAS and TD5 auto Marriage

I t now appears that after nearly 2 years I'm no further ahead with marrying up (getting them to talk to one another) the RRC EAS and my transplanted TD5 ECUs.
The guy who was attempting to fix this 3-4 years ago had a stroke and subsequently left this mortal coil leaving the electrics in somewhat of a mess, not helped by his penchance for using white wire for the few replacements for the many cables he ripped out in his search.

Eventually Kevin at Rovertech kindly provided me with a contact, but he in turn has got ill and is unlikely to be able to sort out or finish the job.

Anyone out there have any suggestions/know anyone who might be prepared to take on the challenge?

I've got significant withdrawal symptoms from not being able to drive the old girl, and I'm starting to think she will not be properly mobile and available before it's time for me to move on!!

As far as I know the EAS in a Softie is pretty much stand alone and only needs a engine rpm and road speed input.

That shouldn't be hard to find with a wiring diagram.

Dose the TD5 take its rpm signal from the alternator?

But am I hearing you right, you put a TD5 in a soft dash??? Blasphemy!!!

Can't answer question - I an an electrical neanderthal. I have most of the wiring diagrams, but its a foreign language to we mere mortals.

It's a bit more complicated than intimated - some RRC/TD5 ECUs need to talk to each other eg EAS height changes (obviously) wont work with doors open etc, and there are some more complicated interfaces that leave my poor brain cold. Was originally transplanted by an aulro LR long term guru in Toowoomba and I flew over, hopped in and drove it home to Fremantle with narry an issue.

Bought it already with 1999 TD5 - much better than a Tdi 200/300, especially with a few tickles like a Bruce Davis Chip and 4HP24 gearbox/HD Torque Converter. I enjoy driving it even more than my recently departed 2004 D2a with fruit.

Aftermarket air isn't a option? I feel like aftermarket air and a LS will be Sarah's future, or maybe her sisters...

Do you have a running TD5 ? I'd probably trace the wiring on a running driving vehicle and just update the Rangie to match. If you need a tach pulse, you maybe able to use the altnerator (or alternatively, I'm sure it'll have a TDC sensor of some sort).

The air suspension would have to be a standalone system, wouldn't the only real concern be an 4hp24 ( unles sit has a seperate computer you can move over). A manual conversion would be a lot easier.

    Hi Shane.

I've driven it with the TD5 for about 15K since purchase in August 2013 (including the 6K trip back from Toowoomba).

Car was running with the TD5 when dropped off 18 months ago Although had some loose wires legacy of the guy who died whilst working on it.

TD5 had just prior had a head refurb after breaking a valve spring - which believe it or not did not break the piston, but did leave a tiny mark.

The 4HP24 works fine - no operational problems apparent there.

The inability to access various heights other than standard eg Access for 91 year old MiL to travel in her (and my) favourite car, was the issue that started the whole fiddling mess.

This is interesting. The air suspension is original to the car, I can't see how the TD5 conversion has anything to do with your problems. Bring her home and go step by step through the suspension and read any fault codes. This shouldn't be a difficult task to fix given the quality of documentation that can be found on the internet The only real costs should be any bags or compressors that may need to be replaced. I imagine most air suspension issues cost nothing other than time to fix.

Most complex systems can be broken down into a series of smaller systems to work out faults. If the thing lifts and holds height well. The plumbing, bags, compressor and height sensors are working so we can move onto the controller.

Nay , forsooth the tD5 (enhanced) is the engine the Classic deserves... Goes respectably quick especially up hills, would leave the petrol 3.9 far in it's wake (lady Sarah) without raising a sweat /increase in temp... And does it without a , ahem, 'drinking habit'.
The standard Classic fuel tank is a let-down when compared to the likes of Pajero, et al.

Having driven Gavin's Diesel Dan D2 and Bessie, she's a lot more fun and rides smooother. Or maybe that's the extra mass of that roof-rack monstrosity?

We need an Electrionics Engineer to nut out interfaces betwixt the warring factions... as the EAS ECU needs to know velocity and engine liveliness... as well as the aforesaid safety features like door opens etc.

Or someone who can discern a devious work-around, feeding false information into the EAS inputs to gain required results. Alas, my talent is fiddling with and salvaging the working stuff, not 'Designing from scratch'

Firstly, as one who put an HS2.8 into a 1993 LSE, I can well understand how well a TD5 would go.
Secondly, there should be no problem with the EAS. I'll have to check my conversion notes (I'm away from home at the moment) but if I recall correctly a feed from the removed V8 engine ECU needed to be replicated but I forget how I did it. I think it may have been a simple 12v feed. I'll think about this and get back to you.
I also removed the EAS gear from underneath the car and relocated it to the space where I removed the ridiculously big subwoofer (which was replaced by a much better Alpine unit). Much easier to work on.
