sounds like someones done a bypass on the emissions control stuff.

Yeah pretty sure none of the emission stuff was hooked up when I put the motor in. But the system was working fine until a few weeks ago. No pressure in the tank and then after a couple of long runs and hot days it all started.

    fuel expanding.

with the emission controls blanked off and the cap on there is nowhere for the fuel tank to vent.

That what it looks like to me. I think in the past because the lines in the engine bay were all leaky the pressure might have been getting out there but now they are fixed they hold the pressure.

Does the plumbing look right in the picture I put up with the arrows on it ?

I'd have to dig through the manuals again......

Diesels, real diesels dont do emissions.

The fuel tank is supposed to have a breather line that runs from the fuel expansion tank that's located in right rear guard. If you look at your fuel filler neck on smaller line goes up into this tank. Then there's another line running from this small expansion tank up to the charcoal canister it's typically the connection on top far left. This means that petrol fumes from tank are always vented through the charcoal canister. And - theoretically the charcoal canister as it's open at the bottom should never see pressure. For your system to be pressuring the fuel tank suggests the the charcoal canister is blocked. These are considered a service item they are still listed at great $$. They are just full of activated charcoal. I cut mine very carefully in half where the clamp sits, brought a kilo of activated charcoal from fish shop ( they use it in filters) replaced the original rusty/rotten gauze screens with some s/s flyscreen and glued back together with araldite (or plastic glue) seems to be working though my fuel system is even more basic. The other thing those fuel vent lines run all way back to rear cross member then back to front I think for severe off road use however all those connections into rear cross member at least on my car were real rust traps.

Ok green lines look correct but where they connect to carbys you need to be able to put a 1/4 inch drill down the tube. If not clean out with a greased drill to avoid putting crap inside the engine.
The line that is attached to P (Purge) on the canister goes to the breather on the back of the engine low down in the centre of the valley cover. On mine via a Z14 0r Z15 Ryco filter I can't remember but this filter must not be blocked. T is for Tank and you should be able to blow back into the fuel tank from that.

The expansion tank arrangement in the right rear is quite complex.

I can remember having to replace a couple of hoses to do with this on my POS when I took the panel off when doing a body swap 15 odd years ago.

Was a bit of a nightmare hiding in there from memory.
