    1988 RRC Indicators not cancelling

I have replaced the indicator stalk on my 1988 RRC as the old one would not stay on in either direction, just kept coming back to the centre position. With the new stalk the indicators will stay on in both directions but they will not cancel. I have lined up the tooth at the back of the steering wheel with the notch in the black collar behind the steering wheel which I think is to cancel the indicators. Is there something else that needs to be done to get the indicators to cancel?

do they cancel by moving the tag on the stalk with your finger? I'm betting your new stalk is no good (the replacements available on ebay are JUNK, I replaced one a couple of years back and it didn't even last 3months before it started playing up).

The indicator stalk was from England and I got it through eBay. I sent the seller a message to inform him of the problem I am having. He replied that he is sorry for the trouble and he will send out a replacement. This makes me think as you have suggested it is a common problem with these cheap stalks, he doesn't even want the one I have already back.

I have had a close look at the indicator stalk and there is actually no tag protruding into where the steering column is. I can get the stalk to operate if I put a screwdriver inside it and push the part that should be connected to the tag. I hope the replacement one I am getting sent has the tag.

Mine is a lot older (74) but is the same set up till at least 81.

The cancelling device is a metal clip that is a friction fit on the steering shaft and has a raised bit that bumps one of two prongs on either side of the end of the stalk to cancel.

there is a plastic collar behind the steering wheel in the later cars .... I discovered this as I broke it refitting the steeriing wheel Oh well... None of my other cars have self cancelled indicators (by design) so its not something I've ever had (or particularly want... it drives me nuts when indicators self cancel when I don't want them too).
