Hi My newly inherited RR Classic is only driving on rear nearside wheel. (embarrassing to get bogged on wet grass).Front wheels werent turning.
High and Low range work fine on bitumen.
I have a donor car which i know has a good auto box and transfer gear box.
My Q is please can anyone suggest the easiest/cheapest way to fix my predicament. How hard is a transplant. can i tackle my self with limited tools ?Thanks Mike

Hi. Donor car 93 RR Classic Zf auto with viscous coupling. thanks mike.
Only one wheel rear wheel may spin if you have an open rear diff.
If the rear output shaft of the transfer was stripped you would have no drive at all .
The front will only start to drive once the Viscous coupling warms up and stiffens.
Possible problems.
1 VC has failed open but very unusual as will mostly seize.
2 VC has seized in the past and broken front diff or CV joint.
My guesses are nothing wrong or that front diff or CV is broken.
The BW transfer case is very simple with the main failure areas the chain(unusual) or The rear output shaft splines stripped, more usual but you would have no drive at all.
Check the front diff by placing transfer in neutral handbrake off, raising one front wheel and turn the wheel which should be difficult. If easy broken diff or CV.
I at this early stage don't think that the Transfer is the problem although if the Viscous coupling is seized it will need to be replaced or you will break more front axle bits. And they are like hen's teeth.
Regards PhilipA
Hi if the actual viscous is open or seized they are easily replaced without removing the transfer box if you have another donor that is ok....High mileage transfercases will have stretched chains and centre diff washers worn down or missing...I still prefer my viscous transfer case but that is just me🙂🙂

What would life be without a Rangie?
Hi and thanks for comments. Diff tested as per PhilipA suggestion.Result -drivers side front wheel rotates easily. Wheel also has 20mm wobble (with hands top and bottom.)
Car also rolls in park . (I previously thought it was broken parking pawl ) Big clue i guess.?
I will attempt to inspect and donor swap offending part, cv or diff. Then test viscous coupling to check its not seized and donor swap if needed. Thanks All Mike
sounds like your swivel bearings / railco bushes are F-d. better get onto that before you break stuff.
Roads?.. Where we're going, we don't need roads...
Yes the play in the front wheel would be swivel bearings stuffed. This could or could not be related to a stuffed CV. You will not know until you dismantle it. Could be CV bits have levered on the hub.
AFAIR the Park pawl should hold even with a broken front CV or diff, so that is a bit of a worry. It could be the park pawl is stuffed. The one on my D2 is pretty iffy. If you have drive to the back the output shaft seems OK but if the car has over say 220KK on it the rear output shaft will probably need replacement.
So you have a number of problems which is not surprising.
BTW did you notice if the front driveshaft was turning when you were able to turn the wheel easily? If it was turning it was not the front axle but maybe the VC but if still it was the front axle.
Regards PhilipA
