Air inlet ports to the exhaust system. I used longer bolts in mine when I removed the rusted-out pipes.
G’day Folks,
Came across these while trying to start a 1983 RRC which had been sitting for a couple of years (interesting outcome, perhaps in another story).
These bolts are adjacent to each exhaust port and don’t appear to be in the right place or orientation to be useful, they are not head bolts.
The engine is a 14D so from an Australian build as I understand it.
When I saw these bolts my mind turned to EGT sensor ports perhaps.
Interested in any suggestions.
Graeme

Aha, that makes sense, I did read about some exhaust air injection for emission control.
Might be a great place to fit and EGT sensor.
I wonder why I don’t see these bolt heads on photos of other heads, I had a good hunt around on the internet
AFAIR the heads were only fitted to cars prior to unleaded in OZ and were only for air injection cars from about 81 to 84. They had an emission cam also which destroyed performance
Nearly all have all the stuff removed.

My early 86 model head these heads and later in the year they went to the flapper style EFI so getting bits for an 86 is always a crap shoot as they changed heaps on them mid year.
I only ditched mine when I stuck the 3.9 14CUX in from a disco 1. Engine had other issues besides lack of power by then with 365,000 KM on it.

So are there any issues running this engine on ULP? It had LPG so I suspect there is no problem. I have partially got rid of it. All the gas stuff made the engine bay look ugly, besides it got in my way when trying to find why the engine wouldn't start.
getting rid of the gas tank will be good too.
No issue running unleaded they are aluminium heads with valve seat inserts so good to go
