    Misfiring ideas

    Recently managed to get a RWC and club plates for my 1980 Rangie and now it has decided to be very uncooperative. The motor (3.5) is a bit tired, but it had been running fine. Compressions vary around 100-110, it has a Holley and points ignition. It will start and idle happily, but as soon as I give it any throttle it misfires really badly and is undriveable. I’ve checked timing and points, carby jets, fuel pump, line and filter, choke is not staying on, not sure how to check coil or condenser but figure if either of them were bung it wouldn’t run at all.
    Any suggestions would be really appreciated, as I’m running out of ideas and getting just a little bit frustrated.

    Spark problems - leads, spark-plugs, cracked rotor button, cap with a carbon track or stuck carbon brush/spring, coil?

    Just replace the condenser they are not expensive & the the best way to test it is just to swap it with another one . There are Coil & condenser testing machines but are not reliable. Have a look at the bottom of the coil it will tell you if a 12v coil or if it needs to be used with a resistor. The older RR had the coil laying on there side , if the coil is low in oil they can short in side. My father bought one of the 1sr RR 4 doors , it would develop a miss which would come & go , the dealer replaced everything on that car except the coil over the 1year warranty period , I was looking at it one day & could hear a spark cracking which I traced to the coil , replaced the coil & all fixed.

    In saying that as Graeme said I think more likely plugs ( they can look good but be faulty in side) or leads, cap, rotor , or may be a vacuum leak some were , You can use a spray bottle of water , spray it around the vacuum hoses & fitting you will hear the water being sucked in.

    The early RRC's used a resistor wire in the starting circuit. White / pink or white /purple from memory and thin and brittle.

    The lack of a separate ballast resistor on the coil can be confusing, if it does use a resistor one.

    Bosch induction leads are cheap from SC, have had them on my POS for over 150 thou and they solved a number of ignition problems like cracking dist caps and backfiring.

    Mine starts all the time on lpg with no issues after fitting them.

    Thanks for the ideas. I will work my way through them, but first need to cure a leaking carby after I pulled it apart to check jets.

    Think I’ve finally conquered it, after checking and double checking everything that’s been mentioned, I took the hose off the vacuum advance and it behaved. Early in the investigation, I had replaced the vacuum advance on the distributor as the old one would not hold vacuum, but the new one gave far too much advance. I don’t think that was the original problem though, that probably got fixed with all the other things I did but because the timing was way out, it still wouldn’t run properly. Hopefully I’ll get to drive it a bit once lockdown number 4 is over.

    the pickup in the base of the dizzie failing will make it feel like its running on 1/2dozen cylinders .... randomly ... all over the place. It is impossible to diagnose by pulling plug leads one at a time. I only found it by substitution with known working parts.

    Aftermarket rotors are crap and break down causing the symptoms you have. Replace only with the original Lucas (yes Lucas).
