    '84 transfer case

A mate of mine is stripping out an '84 3.5L 4 door auto, so my question is.......What transfer case would it have, and will it bolt up to a 5 speed manual box ??
....once again, excuse my ignorance in these matters....

An 84 would have had a manual box from the factory so it’s already been changed which means it could have an LT230 or a Borg Warner TC. Either of which would fit behind the 5 speed. If it is a Borg Warner unit then make sure the viscous coupling is ok before using it.

Can’t remember exactly when they went to the LT77 5 speed and LT230 from the 4 speed LT95 with integrated TC but think an 84 4 door would have had an LT77 5 speed and LT230TC from the factory. Given that the LT77 boxes weren’t the strongest suggests a PO has fitted the auto after it died (like I did to my 86 when this happened).

If they did what I did, then the original LT230 was fitted behind the auto and struck back in which is a fairly straightforward job.

Ritter's did a conversion using half an LT95.
    Just to add another possibility.

I'm lucky enough to have one of those with a C9. Beautiful design and workmanship.

It could also be a borgwarner 35 auto mated into an lt95 gerbox housing

Had one of those too, as part of a job lot of parts. 'Mated' is not quite the right word. It looked more like it was jammed in.

The drive coupling between the two had wedges of metal hammered in to kinda get the different splines engaged.

Also needed the lt95 mounts moved back at least 200mm, hilo lever and handbrake as well and different corresponding length driveshafts. No way I'd put something like that in a RRC. Think I swapped it for a slab.

    cheers, DL
