    Phil’s 82 Range Rover Classic

Took the plunge the other day and clicked “buy it now” and bought a Snowy White 1982 2 door.
It is yet to be delivered, but should arrive in the next week (I hope).
Its not the first Range Rover that I have had as I owned a 1975 and a 1985 Highline many years ago.
My first question is the engine number is 14D*****A. It is also stamped CR 9.35:1, so it is a high compression engine, but what is the significance of the 14A and the suffix A.
Is this number likely to match a 7th month 1982 build ?

    Regards
    Phil

Not sure on the engine number. Should be plenty of lists available on the web.

    Looking forward to some pics!

    It’s arrived

Well the Range arrived at 6:00AM this morning.
It wouldn’t start on the truck so it was rolled off and left at the kerb.
When the day warmed up it started and drove it into the driveway.
It has a Holley 350 and as soon as you try to bring it above idle it dies completely. Will put a kit through it and set it according to Holley specs and see how it goes.

It has a strange (to me) front diff ?

Can anyone provide any ideas what it is.

Looks like a stock diff with a sewer cap welded on the front.

Most likely after the stock cover copped too many dents hitting rocks. Was a common mod on Pirate in the US.

Yes 350RRC it looks like a WW2 German helmet with the rim cut off and welded on.
I had a closer look today and it is only stitch welded, so I can grind the welds off and remove it.
Presumably the original diff housing is ok otherwise oil would be leaking out between the stitches.

discopete, I did a search on here and another member had asked the same question. In the thread there was a link to .pdf of engine prefixes and 14D was not on the list.
Conclusion from the thread is “it’s a bit of a mystery” !

    So I’m non the wiser

Easiest way to fix the issue with the Holley carb is to carefully remove it, walk over to the bin and throw it in said bin and fit a decent carby. 👍

    Hi Phil,
Nice to see another 2-door about to be resurrected. My 80 model has a Holley and was running okay when I got it, but while I was fixing some obvious things under the bonnet I discovered the vacuum advance on the distributor was not holding vacuum, so I replaced it. I did other things at the same time, unfortunately, but from then on, it would idle but not rev at all. Eventually, after a lot of frustration, I disconnected the vacuum line to the distributor, and it behaved itself again. Might be worth a try for yours.
I probably need to consult someone who knows a lot more about ignition timing to sort mine properly, though.
Good luck with your project, old Rangies really are classics.
    cheers,
    Woolly.

Others on here have been happy with their Holley 350.
I realise that off road they have issues, but the Rangie will not be going off road or probably not even on an unsealed road.
What would you replace it with being as the manifold has been modified to fit it.

Just rebuild it and use it.
