    5 speed gearbox

Hello all I am trying to establish what year Classic Range Rovers we’re fitted with 5 speed gearboxes and what gearboxes were they plus transfer case. My other question is can this box be coupled up to the Land Rover 2.6 6 cylinder engine.
    Regards Gippy

The early 5 speed was the LT77 and coupled to an LT230 TC. Not sure on what year they came in but my 86 had that combo from the factory. Would imagine they were introduced with the 4 door RRC.

An R380 would be stronger but I don’t think a 2.6 would give the LT77 many issues - finding a good one would be difficult I think - you’d probably need to rebuild one.

You would need an adapter to make it fit behind a 2.6 - not sure if there’s suck a thing or if you’d need to make one (or have one made)

Keep us posted - I like the idea.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Google and Wikipedia is your friend - "The other major transmission upgrade in the Range Rover's lifetime was the switch from the LT95 combined four-speed manual gearbox and transfer box to the LT77 five-speed gearbox and separate LT230 transfer box in 1983."

At about the same time the 110 went to the LT85 and LT230 rather than the LT77 - not sure why the LT 77 was not used - I guess in Australia was because the Isuzu diesel was bing used and the LT77 would have struggled, but the LT85 struggled anyway.
