I would think a 2" spring lift and 2" body lift will keep you out of trouble when matched with the flared guards.

I guess my question to you is why do you need 35s? You can do a lot of things with 33s a 2" spring lift and extended bump stops..

Parts for these things are getting harder to get if you end up trying to reverse the damage.

    An 89 is a 4 door.
To fit such large and I guess wide tyres you would need to do LOTs to the rear of the car. The front will also need a lot of work. you will need large negative offset wheels to be able to have any turning radius.
AFAIR you would have to cut the rear doors above the seal line, you would have to cut the outer flange off the wheel arch and fit large diameter (as well as wide) flares.
a 2 inch lift gives you nothing unless you also lower the bumpstops ,as if you plan offroad then there is no gain on full articulation with a 2inch lift. You would have to lower the bumpstops anyway so that when the wheel is stuffed into the guard it doesn't jam on the top.
Your gearing would be hopeless so you would need 4.8Ring and pinions.
The axles would need to be Jacmacs or similar with the diff rebroached to take larger axles. I don't think later axles would be strong enough.
You will have to strengthen the ball joint bracket, as although they are stronger in later models they can still rip out..
I think you would need a larger body lift than 2 inch, maybe 4 inch. Then you will have to redesign your bullbar and rear bumper so it doesn't look stupid, also you then run into problems with gear selectors, radiator mounts etc etc.

I have seen a 2 door with all the stuff done so it's possible but expensive and you will break things often.
And all this would see a target on your forehead for any policeman .

Straight answer. You will need, 2" spring lift, 2" body lift, -25mm offset 8" rims, trimmed guards and flares, extended brake lines, correct length shocks, thats about it.
If you want to fit 35's, fit them, don't listen to the 'why such a large tyre' crowd.

And I've got a set of 5 rims with tyres, 4 are cooper stt's 90% tread, 1 x bfg spare off a 2 door that had 2" body lift, 2" spring lift, etc. $600

Also have a set of terrafirma shocks to suit the lift.

Just saying............. also just want to get rid of them.

Classics on 35's look great. DL

Classics on 42's look pretty good too:

As Vern said 2" springs, 2" body lift and offset rims, trim guards add flares and thats it.

My Rangie is an 89 with the above and a set of 35 creepy crawlers.

Is it just the camera angle or is the RH rear flare broken in the first picture from the tyre hitting it?.

The people who did these mods probably don't really care about minor damage like that.

In any case the artic of the diffs is determined by shock length......... some have it sorted, some don't.

My son fitted 35's to his Rangie many years ago now, did all of the above and a little bit of body trimming and it looked good. Worked well off road but it did stifle the performance a bit on road.
That was until the combo of 20 y/o and a worked 3.9 etc the diffs stared exploding so he then fitted Nissan Patrol diffs front and rear, front was basically a bolt in using 80 series coils upside down from memory (might be wrong). Rear took a bit of work but it did all work but the weak link then was the transfer case.............
