    1979 Two Door Restoration…

    Hi guys,

I bought this about 6 months ago, but only finally got it home yesterday.
Now I’ve promised myself to finish my series 2 first, and my barn, before I hook into this one .
I couldn’t help having a poke around….very little rust (sills only so far). Relatively straight and full of red dust.
The main negative is that someone a long time ago started pulling it apart and so there’s a lot of interior bits missing and a lot of random parts floating around.

I’ve ordered a workshop manual and parts catalogue, but whilst waiting for those to arrive, I’ve sprayed some atf/diesel into the cylinders and slowly turned it over by hand. Which already resulted in a major oil leak christening my brand new concrete slab.
There’s a pipe or sender missing in a hole on the oil filter housing? Attached photo.

I suspect I’ll end up doing a complete restoration, but in the short term I’d like to see if it runs and try and drive it to diagnose mechanical conditions…

Now I know I said I wasn’t going to touch this until I finished my Series 2, however I’ve now only got painting left on that and I’ve given up waiting for decent weather…

So I started digging in to the engine…

I suspect this engine is pretty tired. The bores are worn with a slight lip, the valves have sideways play in the guides and all bearings are down to the copper. The rocker shafts, followers and tappets have also had it….

    Camshaft is worn…

    Timing chain very loose….

It’s the original engine so I’d like to rebuild it…all heading off to the machinist for his opinion!

    1979 Two Door Restoration…

Moving on to the steering box. (PAS 3 bolt). Bear in mind I’ve never driven this car, there was little backlash. However on removing it, there is a crunchy feeling at the centre position.
Taking it apart, I’ve found this…

    Spalling on the bearing race…

And where the sector shaft gets pushed against the housing. I guess this is what the adjustment screw pushes the shaft against…meaning it’s now at the limit?

If anyone has any knowledge on these, please give me advice.
From the feel of it and look of it, I would need a new sector shaft and worm gear? I’m not sure if these exist as a part?

    Send it to Simsmetal!
I got tired of the oil leaks on my old '79 and fitted a 4 bolt.
So unless you're really pedantic about keeping it as original as you can .. this is the best path forward.
4 bolt boxes are more plentiful too. Any disco 1 or later RRC and defender use them.

I thought that might be the answer.
Now on the look out for a 3 or 4 bolt steering box with better internals than mine.
