What happened with your RRC today?

The front axle in my pos is County, braced, maxi locker, axles, etc.

Getting prices for parts to do up the calipers (pistons, seals, 41.3mm.) Only from one place..... [biggrin]

Thought about going to 46mm calipers but I have a bolt in D1 pedal box with the dual diaphragm vac booster that I'll try first.

Brakes have been fine with stock set up and Mintex pads.

Doing up the swivel balls at the same time. Raiko bush up top.

One really has to be really aware of the correct seal numbers if you have / want oil lubed wheel bearings.

Slotting the swivel balls on this axle like the last one I had, because i'm keeping the 2" lift it has atm. If I change it the caster will still be fine.

Caster correction bushes were fitted by the PO of this axle and it is just a crap set up............there is a definite unhappiness with the propshaft uni at the TC. Didn't have this prob before with the last modded axle I did and stock super pro bushes.

Slotting the balls is being done by a guy with a mill with a rotary table, Last time I did it was with a drill press and a jig............pita.

Project under development
Want to swap out the "working" BW Viscous coupling for a LT230, but getting more confused each day with the available options/recommendations.

CDL is a given necessity, but do I go for the latest (R?) suffix, or is/are there better choices. Want to retain Disco gearing, not go to Defender ratio.

Bessie is these days mainly a highway tourer and/or towtug, but enjoys a wee play in the sand etc every now and again. Definitely not a concours version.

Why Bessie? - She has a turning circle like the Queen Elizabeth, and was named by the PO, so who am I to rename her after all of his mods.

I really like the LT230Q .... its is very quiet compared to my limited experience with LT230s. It also has very little lash (though I may have just fluked one without worn shims in the center diff).

The whine comes from the helical gear pitch, and on the Q box, the angle changed and there are more teeth to compensate, the downside is the root of the gear is thinner. In some instances, this can be an issue... *IF* the box is a manual box and there is quite a bit of 'abuse' going on, then the likelihood of cracking the teeth off is significantly higher, but there are other issues as you have highlighted, and the way to make them last is to siimply be a gentle driver and not shove too much shock loading through them.

Towing - might be marginal on a manual box, but an auto would definitely reduce the shock loading factors somewhat.

The facts are that the Q gear is quieter because of pitch, but gear strength is compromised because of the thinner tooth root.

How that pans out for each individual is likely to be a different story.

Have thought of that but the part numbers are confusing. I know that they just fit inside 15" rims.

I do know that the calipers that are on this county axle have different bolt sizes compared with RRC ones that I'd rebuilt.

Did you use the proportioning valve?

Pity OL is gone and all Dougal's info with it. I remember he didn't use the prop valve.

Nah no proportioning valve, passed engineering without it. My axle was a 94 rangie, with county swivels and stc1267/stc1266 calipers on it and vented rotors.

Lockheed or 'other' calipers?

Other brand, cheapies, still going fine after 8 years

I remember now that I didn't do the def calipers because they are single line. Was a bit hard to get my head around.

I think the answer may well be to use the later D1 abs MC with the same booster.

Your part numbers match up with 1262 and 1263 for solid discs, which I won't change. Great info.

I'll do the pedal box and reco the 41.3mm calipers first and see what it's like, then think about the def calipers.

The existing single diaphragm booster and MC will lock 31 x 10's on bitumen, just doesn't have that soft powerful feel.
