Finally, found some.... rust
Well I knew my ownership streak was simply too good to be believed.
Only a matter of a few days ago I was skiting to a tradie acquaintance how darn reliable and worry-free my RRC ownership has been in comparison to others.
Bite your tongue lad!
So naturally I was giving the old bus a once-over with the gerni, which includes opening doors and doing jambs and sills etc and all the other places sydney funnelwebs like to hide... (and incidentally found one in between the rear left tailight and the ARB bar... and several huntsman that had taken up residence from the recent rains we had... it's a wonderful wildlife refuge)
So... yep as I was giving it a very mild wash, the doors pavement illumination fell out. I thought oh yeah, old rubber, it's just loose... gave it a bit of a wipe over and then ran the gerni over the inner jamb area and you can imagine the horror.
Well, I learned something. Something undisclosed to me when I purchased the vehicle. It's had a respray (ok what RRC pretty much hasn't) and the door isn't original. In fact It's sapphire blue... under the ardennes green. and the entire lower inside frame is PROPERLY rusted. As in "how the hell did I not see this years ago" - that's how bad it is.
Anyway, long story short, I continued to wash the old bus down and after that was done came back to the door and decided to find out the true extent..... So I put the rotojet on the front (about 5Kpsi) and got personal... and I found some more holes in the inner skin about 10 inches below the striker plate, and a couple of blisters on the bottom where the skin folds over the inner.
Now looking like I need a new door, and possibly more than one....
The light was fading and I rand out of time, but it did not stop me from getting up close and personal with the gerni on a few other suspect imperfections / blisters.
And yes, disappointment followed - which was to be expected.
Now on the hunt for a passenger front door, actually, I think I should look for a complete set of doors TBH. I have no idea if any of them are good.
It would seem that RRC doors are hard to come by. Anyone seen and late versions around? If you have let me know. (concealed hinges)
Failing that, it may be possible to butcher an old door with a rusty skin or somesuch and try to patch one, but at this stage, I think complete doors would be a more straightforward solution.
Me and my big bloody mouth.
Bugger.
Roads?.. Where we're going, we don't need roads...
