    Pipe Dreams?

    Hi All,
I had a very thought provoking idea a few months ago.
The thought was can a ZF8 auto be adapted to the back of a 4.6 liter and set up in my 86 classic.
Has anyone else had the same thought or done such a project and what was involved?

Why not go the whole hog and fit the 4.4 litre Ford petrol V8 at the same time (like in the RRS)?

More poke, less fragile and are already 'acquainted' with that trans.

4.4 only came with the ZF6 , you will first need to find out if a standalone controller is available and considering that the trans ECU is on the valve body in the pan that may be difficult.
Like anything with enough cash anything is possible.

The reason why I am thinking along these lines of using the Rover 4.6 is because I have two already to go but was also considering the fuel consumption savings that can be made with the ZF8 box, and yeah the stand alone controller is another hurdle.
Yeah that magic word "CASH" the pipe dream may well and truly come to a full stop once it hits that wall.

But just as a interesting note what would be the best engine set up with the 8 speed auto do you reckon?

4.4 TDV8. What tfransfer case are you planning to mate to the 8 speed - noting the tfr case front drive shaft is on the wrong side for a RRC. Of course there are ways around this - called money.

    Hand brake??

At present I am looking at options as to what can and what can't be done.
I did notice that the front output shaft is on the other side too, which is another problem again.
Not sure if the old transfer case can be adapted but I'm sure as you have suggested a lot of money thrown at it would more than likely fix the problem.

    Hmmmmmm.
Just having another thought, if I sell the two 4.6litre engines one complete with ECU and harness, the other a brand new short motor with top hat liners, then the ZF4-26? complete with computer and harness, that is bolted up to the complete 4.6 it might go a fair way to paying for the 8 speed auto and the 4.4 engine, Hmmmmmm.
But it still won't finish there will it?
