I have just come home from the engine shop. He measured the pistons on 1 an 2 down the bore 35 thou and pistons 7 and 8 are 45 thou down the bore. So the clearance gets greater as you move along the block. He is going to even it up and give me a deck height of 15 thou for all the cylinders.

I am now looking for a complete gasket kit for when I reassemble the motor (3.9 litre 38D), I want to use the 10 bolt composite head gaskets. And a new set of bolts. I will also need the intake manifold gasket to match the intake ports.

Anyone bought a set recently, where from, how much?

I have ended up getting a full gasket kit plus a set of head bolts for $236, the head gaskets are Elring brand.

I am most of the way through cleaning up the heads but waiting for the block to come back so I can locate the inlet manifold on the block and heads to port match the heads and inlet manifold.

One problem I am having is getting into the corners of the ports to get the required finish on them. Currently I don’t have anything that will get into the corners, anyone else faced this problem.

I have the new 9.35:1 pistons on the rods and will reuse the old bearings, camshaft and lifters as they have all done less than 2500km, new rings though. The valves and seats will also be recut as when I removed the valves it looked like some of the exhaust were not sealing very well.

Looks like its going to be an expensive experiment, somewhere around $1000.

That is so cheap - when i rebuilt a 4.0 into a 4.6 it cost a few thousand.
