    Starting issues

This is a strange one ... over the last month the ****box range rover has decided it randomly will not start. i can hear the fuel pump running if I cycle the key .... but there is no sign of it firing .... It feels like you can crank it forever and it would show no sign of starting. If I had down the button on the fuel switch so it'll start on gas, it fires instantly. But here's the weird bit, if I flick it to petrol, it'll run perfectly on petrol as well...... If I switch it back off, it'll start and run on petrol instantly. Very aggravating .... Is there a sensor that will prevent the car starting, but not running if it's currently running?

Hmm... what about a cold start timer? I'll have to hit the manuals I guess

My POS is started on gas all the time. No backfires since going to Bosch inductive leads 10+ years ago.

I can understand reluctance to do this if you have a MAF.

I still haven't looked into this. Its something to do with the idle stepper motor circuit. As when I start it on gas, it either doesn't idle or is roaring away at 2000rpm. I think the stepper must wind wide open as a part of the start sequence .... and sticks there. the car could then be so lean it won't cold start ???

The only thing I have really replaced in the distant past is the idle stepper motor ..... as I rekcon I killed the one on it when the fule pressure regulator died (infact I have two here and I tried them both .... so figured I'd killed them both by flooding them with petrol).

After replacement it was if anything worse at having a consistant idle. Maybe I purchased a 3rd dodgy idle stepper motor Its driving me bat**** crazy, I just CANNOT buy anything for cars that isn't so crappy quality, it'll even work straight out of the box..... At the time I just figured there must ahve been wiring issues to the idle stepper motor.

Tonight I noticed the orange exclamation mark flickering on the dash as I cranked it. Is there a simple way of reading the error codes on this car? that should point me to the issue right away

I just thank the gods that I've never ever been interested in buying a car with all the doo dads necessary for a modern motoring experience.

    Good luck Shane!

Well I obviously didn't put off looking at this until eariler this week I found it wouldn't run on petrol at all..... even once started on gas. the idle stepper was either sticking wide open leaving it idling at 2500rpm ..... or 200rpm and stalling.

Anyway, I spotted some scrap metal masquerading as a 4post hoist on facebook ..... down in Colac. So obviously immediately agreed to buy it site unseen .... hmmm.... I'll need the fuel tank capacity if I can't find LPG down there.

Now, I had no fuel pump running when the key was cycled on. Which is weird 'cos it was running perfectly fine previoulsy on petrol if I started it on gas.

so under the drivers seat I checked the fuses .... and gave them a clean all seemed good. After pulling each fuse I'd cycle the key to see if the pump cycled (nope).

workng across the bunch of relays, pulling each standard small relay one at a time, cleaning and reffiting then cycling the key ...... no pump... hmm

I pull the tall green relay closest to the center console, its a standard relay pinout .... maybe its a timer relay ?? Anyway, when I pulled that, gave it a clean and refitted. The petrol pump them cycled when I turned the key. So I tried the starter and it now starts on petrol and runs properly again.

So there you go. If you have weird intermittant issues with running on petrol, the taller green relay under the drivers seat is where to go.

Now I just need to work out what this is and chase up the manuals for it. The post standing up has a ram that pushes up vertically out of the top of the post to pull the cables/raise the platform. The owner said it did figure out how to assemble it and kept it all this time as he wanted to installed it next to his other hoist. You can lift a car up on it, lock it in, and lower the ramps away so the car is suspended with the weight off the suspension. He said it took him about a day to figure out how it goes together. The reason he pulled it out was it was converted from 3phase to 240volt, but whoever converted it didn't do a good job. It shattered the pump housing and trashes it as the 240motor wasn't in line and working mounted properly to the flange.

I'm thining I should be able to buy the cheap hoist power packs on fleabay these days and convert it over to one of them.

Yeah, that's another story. I was just throwing a leanto up beside the shed. It was going to be a skillion shaped 12 x 12 meter leanto that had 5 meter wall height one side and 4.2 meter the other. There would be a row of poles inside at the 6 meter mark to help carry the roof. Someone complained as it was going up and the council told me to stop. Its only taken 7months of being messed around by the coucnil to get approval for a simple little shed on 5 acres (first it was the wrong application type ... that took them 3 months to let me know... even then in the letter they sent me they didn't tell me which permit application I had to use). So I rang them and they suggested which one to use. Then I was sent an automated upload link for additional documents..... Fast forward another few months and I ring them and say "What is going on .... ".... They are apparently waiting on documents to be sent to them. I said "I uploaded them as requested MONTHS ago"...... "Oh yeah that .... that upload system never seems to work" ...... Why the hell tell you to use something that doesn't work? And not tell you it doesn't work ?

It doesn't matter how hopeless our council has been in the past .... the always manage to be worse in every dealing with them.

I couldn't get plans for a 12 x 12meter skillion, all the shed places use a computer program to do the engineering. so now it'll just be a standard 12 x 12 gable shed (if I ever get to the starting line that is). I still need to do the home builders course, find a surveyor .... the hoops you need to just through for a simple shed is just insane. If the neighbour hand't complained this would have been up 12months ago with brand new materials ... and they wouldn't have a half assembled frame to look at for over a year.

I've managed to break the hydraulic filter on the tractor tyring to get it off to clean it .... so I need to somehow extract that (possibly I'll need to replace the entire hydraulic unit on the tractor so I can get it out of the shed, and put the hoist in there and start trying identify what it is. Hopefully someone will be able to recognise it if I get the parts layed out so it looks like a hoist
