    '93 Vogue transfer

I have just been given a '93 Vogue transfer case, from an auto, with a crook viscous coupling ( "it just lost drive" ) and I want to know if I can use this box with a 5 speed manual to replace my '81 gearbox/transfer ?
The box was free so the price was right

    I assume the ‘81 has the LT95 4-speed like my ‘83 had.

Pretty sure you can't fit an LT230 to the LT95 box.

Does the transfer case from an auto vehicle with a viscous coupling have a centre diff lock? I think not.

The P38A manual says "The viscous coupling removes the need for a manually controlled differential lock."

I assume the same applies to the RRC with a viscous coupling.

The LT230 is a transfer case, it needs a separate gearbox.
    The LT95 is a combination transfer/gearbox.

The viscous coupling was never a good system - wheels have to slipping before it locks and it will likely cost a fortune to fix it. As Loanrangie said ditch the VC coupling system tfr case and put in an LT230. Most Rangie owners do when the original VC plays up.

G`day as you say you have a 5spd in your first post .

Yes you can use the viscous transfer though you probably need the prop shafts as well .

Many that haven`t had or used them don`t like them , of the transfers it`s the quietest it just work when it`s needed , when the front traction slips it locks , with the 230 when you push the lever across it locks . they preform the same task in differnet ways , mechanically nothing is similar .

It is usual for the one you have to fail by locking it is unusual to fail with no drive , it is usual for the auto to fail with no drive or more so the spines striping . I`d suggest you pull it apart , if it`s open you may find it has a good viscous and something else has let go .

The viscous unit in yours is the same used in the P38a so it was used from 1988 or 9 through to , 2001 or 2 , the 230 came in 1982 or 3 , i`m only talking RR , Discos had them the 230 and strangly it is often Disco people or people that have owned Discos that knock the vicsous from my reading on this site .

We have an 84/5 RR that has a 230 i have no problem with it we had an LSE that had the viscous and we had no problem with it , there is a 93 and 95 out the back that both have the viscous and i have one spare vicsous unit for either of these if i ever get them back on reg . We also have an L322 that uses a viscous in the transfer though it is different to the one your talking about .

In my experience the first thing to go in a viscous Borg warner box is the rear output shaft .
It is a relatively cheap and easy fix , although I had a struggle to find a rear bearing with the correct wide tolerance. Eventually got one from Ebay Germany.
All you do is take off the rear housing from the BW and the shaft should pull out unlike mine where the shaft was so worn that the splines had jammed together. However came out with persuasion. The internal splines on mine were fine.
Funny RRCs do rear output shafts at 220KK and 38as do chains.
There is a centre diff in the BW box but without a rear shaft you go nowhere. Usually Viscous couplings seize and you still have drive but skippidy skip on turns.
    Regards PhilipA
