    Intermittent cutting out

Hi all, I have an 87 with 14cux injection from a later model. It runs perfectly, starts, idles, revs no problem...but after it gets warmed up I have an intermittent issue where it just dies while I'm driving along...I can feel it happening and there's no response from the throttle. If I try to start again it wont start, but if I wait a few minutes it fires right back up again. Any ideas? I have been told the ignition modules can cause this, but I'd like some opinions from some learned souls.

    Many thanks in advance, Matt

I haven't changed it but I believe the previous owner did...you think that could be the culprit?

I have a 1990 4 door and experienced the same symptoms. My fuel pump was still original (220,000km) and was told that on average they got at about 120,000km.

Something to look at - if you aren’t getting enough fuel it will cause issues that’s for sure.

    Fuel or ignition.
grey ghost right on the money there
And as you say if you can feel it going, does lend weight to a fuel issue.

Just a thought, being an 87,that would have had the older style fuel pump to suit the earlier flapper 3.5.
Since you’re running 14cux that would usually have been mated to the later style white plastic drop in type for the 3.9.
They may well have quite different delivery rates and it’s been worked a bit harder and now letting you know it’s had enough, haha .

My experience with the ignition module is it either goes or won’t start at all,no in between, but others have had similar to yours, whereby after a cool down it fired back up.
Quite right they tend to fail after sustained heat cycles and age.

Posted on here somewhere years ago about what’s inside them.
Split two in half to compare original vs dubious lucas branded replacements.
They are filled with a poisonous gel and some very basic wiring.
The new Rucas replacement versions had very little heat gel inside and some poor soldering.

If you intend to troubleshoot the module,as yours has likely seen good service if original, try to find new old stock if possible.
Many go for the relocation kit available which puts it away from the heat source up onto wheel arch or front grill area.
Land Rover did this in later models for this very reason.

Failing finding an old stock module I did have good success with a ‘Regitar’ branded module. These are available from suppliers online in oz.
As an aside, after the cars running warm feel the coil and see if it’s nuclear.
My moneys on grey ghost tho, maybe new filter and pump, justify it as ongoing maintenance

Thanks for your generous replies, I'll try the fuel pump and filter first; I don't mind buying/putting on new parts but would rather have some idea before pulling the trigger.

    Thanks again, Matt

Why don't you just check to see what is missing next time this happens ..... The spark or fuel will not be there. ie: pull a plug lead and see if you have spark. chekc the fuel rail and see if it has fuel ... .some have a shrader valve on them
