If there is end float beyond what the manual states, it will allow increased backlash between the gears and generate noise (whine, wine, sound of better half).
They're not conical gears, I can't see how that would make any difference because the lash doesn't change.

Tomorrow I'll post a quote from Haynes about rebuilding these things and what a waste of time it is to get rid of the whine.

The really amusing thing is Haynes go right through the rebuild procedure for the gearbox and TC in the most detailed manual I've got and the waste of time / whine info is right at the end.

    cheers, DL

    From Haynes:

‘Note: It is sometimes difficult to decide whether it is worthwhile removing and dismantling the gearbox for a fault which may be nothing more than a minor irritant. Gearboxes which howl, or where the syncromesh is worn but double declutching can overcome the problem, may continue to perform for a long time in this stage A worn gearbox usually needs a complete rebuild to eliminate noise because the various gears, if re-aligned on new bearings, will continue to howl when different wearing surfaces are presented to each other.
The decision to overhaul therefore, must be considered with regard to time and money available, relative to the degree of noise or malfunction that the driver can tolerate.’

I didn’t state that they were conical gears !
However, both the input gear and intermediate gear are mounted on taper roller bearings at each end.
If the preload/end float is incorrect (excessive) then radial clearance will be allowed between the taper roller bearing cup and cone and the rollers.
The radial clearance will then allow the gears to rotate off centre and increase the backlash in the mesh of the gears and this will create noise.

I apologise if my previous post was not succinct.
    Regards
    Phil

    Hi Blokes
Thank you to all and sundry for your replies to my thread, including all the tongue in cheek comments relating to the WINE.
    Pretty funny stuff actually.

The other thing to consider with a whining TC is the handbrake mechanism.

Every individual bit of it from the button in the handle to the last clevis pin vibrates.

Yep, and it's not endemic to the LT230 either.
The BWTC suffers from this issue in an equally audible fashion.

I was referring to the LT95 TC hand brake mechanism.

Years before I bought my first RRC I was in a mates 2 door and commented on the noisy box..............he said 'watch this' as he touched his thumb on the handbrake lever button and half the noise disappeared.

I must count how many loose moving parts there are in the hand brake set up on the 'outdoor' LT 95 tomorrow.
