Hi all,
Could anyone tell if a 1979 model 2 door's running gear is the same as a 1983 four door?
I'm mostly interested in the mechanics i.e suspence, diff's, engine, gear box and transfer.
Reason being I can buy a 79 model 2 door with good running gear and acc. but the body is for the scrap yard and I would like to know if the runnung gear will fit other models before I comitte to buying it.
Cheers Shane

Thanks
Could you also please tell me what other year models are the same as a 79 ?
Is the 79 and 83's gear bolt straight in or are modifications required?
Thanks for you time
Cheers Shane
Most range rover classics until 95 are very similar in origin, but there are some quirkey changes along the way, its best to ask a direct question and I'll answer, I can't really be bothered spieling it all out, but there is a quick few like, CV's changed after 86, wheel bearing spaceing changed the same time, brake line fittings change from imperial to metric around 82, Trailing and radius arm bushes change in 86, rear shock mount went from opposed (1 front 1 back ) about 85 and many more, but with lots of changes their is ways aroung them, useing the appropriate housing, bush, bolt, dildo etc to make it fit
So best to ask away![]()

You should really consider what you want to do, because almost certainly the work you will do removing and re-fitting a new body will be worth more than the vehicle you end up with.
You should also consider that the registration authorities may have things to say about what ADR's are required to be met by your hybrid.
All that aside, the vehicles that are most compatible with the 1979 will be the vehicles up to 1983 that still had the 4 speed gearbox, a quarter window on the front doors, seat belts as part of the seats and the small instrument binnacle.
The next point you may go to are the end of the 1985 model. The ones with the door and bonnet hinges visable and the fuel filler the same as your 1979. However those models you will need the whole body, interior and wiring. So it becomes a big job with lots of little differences. Most noticably is the fact that the alloy rims of the 1985 and later classics will not fit on the hubs of your 1979.
You should avoid a vehicle 1986 and later as there are too many differences.
You may however be able to pick up a later model fo not much more or even less than the 1979 you are considering.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Hey Shane
Where abouts are you as I have a 79 rangie which has an excellent body (no rust) but no engine gearbox or transfer. This might be easier for you to transfer these into. I bought it to do what you are looking at doing with my 77 that I also have, which is sitting in the yard. But bought a 90 model rangie, so don't require both now.
I'm in Brisbane

Hi Shaneo,
I put an 81 2 door body on a rego'd 74 chassis. Had a friend who worked for the RTA who said it would be OK because there are no numbers on the bodies from that era, and going to a newer body was OK.
You can't put an older body on a newer chassis because ADR's were updated all the time. (side intrusion bars, etc)
If you're putting the driveline in your rego'd 80's chassis you would have to retain (any) anti-pollution stuff, and it just becomes a notifiable engine (number) swap.
The brakes on my 81 are metric. The calipers and hoses from your 80's model will bolt straight onto the 79 diffs, so you're still all metric with that system.
Best to ring your RTA and check............ you don't have to say who you are.

Hi all,
Thanks a tone for all your help.
I will exsplain the thoughts behind the questions so I don't look totaly stuipid.
I can buy a 79 model 2 door with a tone of acc. I.E ,warn winch, 4inch lift, air lockers, bash bars, new box and transfer to name afew for around $2k. but as I have said the body is no good and it will require a blue slip for rego(which it will fail)
So my thoughts were to buy the 79 model and transfer the acc. to a later model for two reasons, they are easier to find in good condition and the other being 4 doors are easier for the kids to get in and out of.
So all said and done I think I will just find another 2 door to put some parts on and keep the rest for as donor vehical
To Guy G. I would be interested in your rangie but I live in Sydney
Once again you have all been a great help thanks heaps
Cheers Shane
Hey Shane
As an alternative, but most probably still a freight issue, I do have a 76 rangie body which has already been completely stripped and is sitting under our verandah. Suppose it depends on which components of the 2 door need replacing. I've got all body parts - both structural and panels etc
