I'm not sure if the 85 had sealed beams or H4s.
If you have H4s already, then the light output should be OK.
Check the voltage at the lights: if less than battery voltage while running, then fit relays & maybe upgrade the wiring too.

Bigger H4 globes are an option too but check the basics first.


Then there's HID if you want to get serious .

If you want to upgrade your headlights you MUST either build a loom which feeds the power to the headlights straight form the battery , or buy a loom from vendors such as Piranha. This routes the power through a relay which is switched by the headlight switch.
If you do not you will fry the switch very quickly.
The loom itself with no other changes will probably make quite a difference.
I have had 100/90 bulbs in my headlights and IPF replacement reflectors with a loom for many years and they are quite bright even without spots.

I would not use the Hellas as I have found them not very good, as they have a very shallow beam so need to be adjusted very accurately. Even cheap 120MM rounds from Supacheap are probably better, but again you must feed them from battery power via a loom, with the existing switch triggering a relay.

The other problem with early RRs is the headlight mounting system. It's not that precise in beam alignment.

I bought a set of Wipac freeform reflectors off fleabay, however the seller was a bit of a knob and never got back to me regarding the order. Do a search on the number in the link.
Wipac do have an intl purchase site, however Australia isnt in the list, so I couldnt get them direct.

I ended up buying two sets, "just in case"!!

I've done an IPF loom and globe upgrade kit on my S1 Disco and my Defender and it makes a huuuuge difference - well worth the money, I hardly need my driving lights now!

Pm drivesafe on the forum, he sells a headlight upgtade and cheaper than the IPF ones i think. I had this kit on my old Rangie and it was great. I would get another one but had a headlight upgrade done already

The old Rangie headlights are crap IMO. I use the el-cheapo sealed beam units that supercheap sell, for less than $10 each you can't go wrong. I had the 'blue light' bling crap but after a water crossing or two (yes it does rain in QLD although not often ) they got hammerd so back to the dunga sealed beam unit for me

I have upgraded the headlights in my '87 Rangie with IPF H4 inserts. Then I fitted genuine Subaru (Phillips I think) upgraded globes. THey are still 55/60 watts, but give a much whiter light.
