    Finally got one

    Gday,

Finally bought myself a rangie after driving a laser for three years
$4500 got me a 92 classic with 340 odd thousand kays on the clock with a recon engine and auto gearbox in it only done 9000kays

body is pretty straight other than the bull bar is bent and the bonnet sits a bit high from a dodgy panel beating job. easy fix

Interior is pretty spot on, just the centre console has been taken to with a hack saw, and other than that is pretty straight.

Just a couple of questions to you rrc gurus

it has a k&n pod filter; good idea or not
and are the sidelights supposed to come on when the key is at acc? i suspect a wiring fault.

and belive it or not... no oil leaks!

    any info would be appreciated
    cheers

1: Bad idea, plenty of info here if you search.
2: Nope. I suspect something is wrong there.

if lighting switch is the same as an '88 (paddle switch on left of steering column pod ?) then suspect this. it is a common fail item. mine was not ignition dependent though so your problem may be different. cheap fix if it is though..........

in regards to the air filter, could someone pm me if they know the wearabouts of a rrc 3.9 air filter box somwhere near perth as mine was removed to fit the k&n pod.

the wiring i suspect is a fault because it you leave the side lights on, and then remove the key, the stereo remains on until the lights are switched off.

ill rip the dash apart this weekend and hopefully just a simple earth faullt.

any other hints or tips this is my first real 4wd (i had a brain fart and drove a lada for 6 months) would be greatly appreciated

    cheers

Whitakerb. Nothing wrong with owning a Lada Niva- be proud. The car far exceeded its poor reputation - amazing where they would go and how rugged they were. A good idea let down by poor factory quality control, poor back up/marketing and a very poor [biased] slant against them by the motoring media in Oz. And like sheep every body canned them without knowing what they were really like. I quite liked them but then I'm a sucker for quirky cars. Old Saabs, old Jags, old Volvos, they all tick boxes for me. And I've got a great condition but quirky LSE RRC - had it for ages actually. And like yours mine doesn't shed a single drop of its body fluids. The concrete stays dry and dusty.

Got my eye on an old 2 door RRC at the moment. It's not for sale but is sitting in a carport unused [ and has been for several years now] with old foam matresses stored on it. It might be the buy of the century as it is absolutley pristine. That is if they want to sell it. One day I moght catch up with the owners as it's a holiday house and they are not there very often.

Enjoy your RRC and welcome to quirkiness and addiction.

Good model the 92's, does it have ABS or are you one of the lucky ones to miss out (prefer no ABS, makes it cheaper to fix). Chasing up one as a replacement but I am starting to get attached to my 88 pov pack Rangie that was a bargain buy but see what happens.

K&N filter, throw it in the bin, they're crap. Stick to the good old paper ones for $20 you can't go wrong. I had a K&N and I get of cleaning it after every bloody trip. A air cannister should be easy to get, the early pre-94 Discos will fit too since they're the same thing

    Have fun.

92s are a good model - except when the ABS sulks! IIRC early 90s XJ6 Jags had the same aircleaner/ box setup. You might be able to pick one up from a Jag wrecker.

the air filter is going to have to wait.
i sorted out the electrical problem. THe previos owner connected the radio to the acc and the sidelight live so whenever the acc was on it powered the sidelights. easy fix.

unfortunatly it does have abs, but when it fails, ill probobly just shout at it untill i can replace it. when did abs get installed, because i have a jan 1992 base model and it has it fitted

I shouldnt have said no leaks, i think the car heard me it has had a wobbly and (possibly) done a head gasket

oh well always wanted to rebuild a v8

If it has no oil leaks you'd better put some oil in everything! Oil leaks were LR's way of letting you know everything had at least some oil in it.

this all sounds rather unfortunate. what are your symptoms and/or what bled out of where ? a problem shared etc.......

we feel for you brother, we've all been there in the nadir of despair just days after the elation of aquisition.
