Not sure in Tassie but you may need an engineer to certify body lift and 33s.
The 3.5 on gas will make you insane. So the 4.4 would be an option. They nearly all crack pistons. I use Holden star fire or 173 pistons with a light pin hone as a cheap replacement. Rover 3.5 pistons have a higher compression height so will end up around 12.5:1 I think. Be OK on full gas. Bit of stuffing around to put the 4.4 in mounts, drilling etc.

Why is it rough? Body, Interior,Rust in chassis or mechanically.
It would want to be cheap.
May be cheaper and easier to find one still on the road in the long run.

Chucaro, the reason I was looking at this one, price and location and on gas. Personally i'd prefer a diesel disco, and I may continue to save for one, but my brother also has a lot of rangie spares off his spare 2 door. Hence why this is also attractive.

Tony, there isn't much around here for that kind of price. this for example is about double, and not really that much better Tassie Cars - Advert Details . But then again i've yet to give the rangie a look in the flesh yet ;)

a flight opver to vic and a boat trip back for this price of vehicle isn't really worth it in my book.

Id say its only worth about $1k - $1500 max...

No reg and rough body... hell i can give you one...

only parts worth $$$$ are the extra's and thats not much..

If the standard transfer case is still in it, it wouldn't pull the skin off a pudding with 33's!! Even in standard trim they were incredibly gutless, as it has the 3spd torqueflyte and 1:1 high range. This can be overcome with a defender 1.410:1 transfer case, but it will still be a bit of a slug.

$2k sounds OK, but I'd still get it looked at if you can!

My thoughts are a 86/7.
Basic and even withthe LT77, they will go if looked after.
Even a 4 speed auto is nice but put a 3.9 or 4.6 in.
Mine was a stonker. Never let me down.

Had electric windows that had to get fixed and not much more that could fail.
Done Koni shocks and Lovell springs with 50 body lift.

Great ride, sold only to make room for next one.

Thats my pick but start of with a straight car, put in what makes you happy by a skilled tradesman and flog it hard, they are tough.

Hmm, just bought another Disco, what am I doing- Listen to myself and buy a RRC.

RRC of that age, enthusiast maintained and in all round very good condition would be looking at 2500-3500k max.
if its full of bling and goodies then you can adjust the price accordingly.

I picked my 1985 Rangie 4 door up from the markets section here for $3500 4 months rego, 5speed LT77,3.5 carbied, duel fuel, 105 litre tank (wet test), factory alloy brush bar with 2 Hella rally 1000's,factory roof rack,duel batteries,15in mags (globe)with 235-75-15s, front seat armrests good radio/amp, tinted glass,and only 189 697 klms, now has 195,258 klms, had broken alternator bracket, needed wind screen replaced (got stonechips on return trip to Qld) and needed headlight upgrade relays,(done) all interior original carpets,etc right down to hand books and paint, was on it's original NSW 1985 rego plates :D

Carbied are easier to work on and parts are still available,

Things to look for, rust in footwells and inner rear guards, bad head/blinker/horn switch,water leaks,alternator bracket broken, leaking powersteering box, noisey gearbox, "A" frame ball joint noise on takeoff,vague steering,

Thanks for the tips all. I'd not really planned to keep 33's on it. Probably get them to on sell for other goodies or repairs ;) or even a swap for a 2nd set of rims with a more normal size MT's for playtime.

What size did they come with, a 29 is that right? so a 30 or 31 would be a better play tyre size?

There isn't much choice down this way unless you know of anything down south justin. Clarkie, I tend to agree to value unless it is very tidy, but as I said, prices here are a bit inflated.

As for power, you have to remember i'm coming from a series 3 with the 2.6, this will feel like a world of power to me!!! Gas also appeals to me, despite losing storage to get it. The big roof rack should offset that loss to an extent.

I am keeping an eye open, and I have a couple of leads on buyers for the Ambulance which is heartening.
