    cooling system pressurised when cold

This one is hard to explain, my RRC was using coolant or so I thought, it was dribbling out of the overflow when it was idling but not when running (think bit hard to watch whilst drivng), then one day the coolant light came on, so I topped it up and took screw offf the radiator to top it up aswell, all was good for a week when the coolant light came on again, so I took it to a mechanic, I asked if he could presure test the system, but he said the system is holding pressure, so we opted for a new radiator cap (simple start up fix) anyway he said keep a eye on the coolant to see what is does. I drove it 35 kays to work today, turned it off at 7.50am and didnt touch it till 5.00pm. When I went to take the radiator cap off it blew about 100ml of coolant out of the overflow, so it had sat for nine hours on a moderate temp day (vic) and still had pressure in the system, its got me buggered why.

Most likely a head gasket. If you release all the pressure when cold, drive it to work and check the feel of the top hose and it is rock hard, this is most likely the cause.
Get a carbon monoxide test done on the cooling system. This will tell you if combustion gas is getting into the system. If its positive, new head gaskets.

    Cheers

    Hi Toey,

Where are you? Sell it to me! How much?

Really sounds more like gas in the convertor is mixing with the coolant that circulates around the convertor. Smell check? Does it happen the same when you run it on petrol?

Could also be an air lock in the system. Don't give up yet.

    cheers, DL

As LOVEMYRANGIE said, get the hydrocarbon test done. That will tell what the problem is. Then you will know and will be able to make a decision.

had the hydrocarbon test done came back positive, but the mechanic also told me to turn the gas off at the tank and drive it on petrol to see if the converter is leaking gas as was suggested by 350rrc so i will find out Monday there, plus the boss told me not to fix it myself they will pay the first thousand off the repair cost, great boss i got...

turned the gas off at the tank today and ran the line dry, then changed the thermostat as she is running rich on petrol, and when bleeding the cooling systm up and got all the air out she seems to of come good. bloody impco converts, think the diaphams **** its self in the coverter.

might have to hit the boss up for a thousand bucks worth of tyers instead

after running the car i noticed that the people that put the gas on have bypassed themostat with the converter so its more than likely running cool becasue of that and not the themostat at all and what a bugger they are to change (themostat that is)
