87 Rangie would have an LT77 (reverse next to first).

The better box is the later R380 (reverse next to forth, under fifth).

It is a straight bolt in replacement which is much stronger. R380s were fitted to Disco I update and Disco II.
If you source one, make sure you get one to suit a V8, a Tdi one won't fit.

r380 also has take off points for an oil cooler built in if you want to fit one

Hey Beagle, Not sure if you're doing the work yourself or giving it to a workshop - quite a few of us on here use M R Automotive at Redcliffe to look after our cars.

Go for a 4 speed maybe?

There was a LT95 4 speed and transfer that went for $81 last week on ebay.I asked the bloke about it's condition, and was apparently all OK.These are a much stronger box than the LT77 and will bolt straight in.If your not happy with the top gear ratio, you can change transfer ratios without removing box from vehicle.

the clutch splines are different so you would need to put in a new clutch plate if you did this, but not hard.
