range rover 2 doors in OZ

Hi, new to OZ & I was just wondering what's the first year that R/R (2 DOOR) where imported to Australia. Always liked the early 2 door cars.

    Hi and welcome,

1972 AFAIK, as kit cars 'assembled' by Leyland in Sydney until about 1982 or 84.

The 81 body I have on my POS had all sorts of initialed and dated paperwork that had been left behind interior panels during 'assembly' in Sydney.

I use the word assembly in inverted commas because there was a serious lack of sufficient sealant between the A pillar and the interior guard or plenum chamber on both sides. Could nearly put a biro through the gap. (Must have leaked like a sieve)

Missing sealant under the roof in places as well.

    cheers, DL

The first Range Rovers distributed in Australia were three in late 1970 used as demonstrators, a red one, a blue one and a white one. They were available to purchase from 1971 but with World-wide demand delivery could be more than 2 years, so it is rare to find one earlier than 1972.

There is one owned by a fellow (Ian D) in Melbourne which is one of the three original demonstrators, the white one.

1970. They were still in short supply in 1976. In 1973 when I started at Leyland Truck and Bus, we would take orders, but tell the customer that we had no idea when one would be available, minimum 6 months, maybe a lot more. Sales reps would 'phone customers when we got a few according to date of order to see if they still wanted one. No choice of colour "You ordered a green one, you can have a brown one." Some had cloth seats, some had power steering, whethr you had ordered these items or not. We, and the customers, took what was sent. No discount, no trade-in unless it was another 4WD. Series III station wagons were even scarcer. Land Rover sold almost the entire production to the UN. We used to tell the customers that we had no idea at all when one would be available. These are a couple of the reasons why LR lost their market share.

That and the period when the County came out that there were no Land Rovers available for almost 2 years. They closed up the PMC factory at Enfield but did not have reserve production capacity in the U.K. to make up for the loss of the Aussie plant.

    What were they thinking?

My husbands grandfather has a Range Rover which is his pride and joy. Still drives it to this day, he claims it was one of the 1st that came to Australia and it is a mustard colour.

I think this was in 1972.

He turns 90yrs old in a couple of weeks and wanted to get him something to do with The Range Rover he has, anyone know where i could get more information on this, or some merchandise of the old Range Rovers?

I have googled and googled, and have found nothing.

eBay is usually full of interesting stuff for Range Rovers. Do a search on Range Rover at the home page, then widen your search for "Worldwide" and then narrow it to "Merchandise" and you'll get some thing like this
Range Rover, Cars, Trucks items at low prices on eBay.com.au

    cheers

Thanks so much for your help.

I searched on ebay, but didn't find anything compared to what you found for me, much appreciated.

I would really like to get him maybe a model car of the Range Rover he has, or even a Jacket with the symbol on it... any ideas where i could find that?

(I know this probably isn't the right place to be asking this, but you guys seem to be a wealth of knowledge about Range Rovers)

    Hi YumMum2

Might be worthwhile starting a new thread (in the Range Rover section - why not?) asking about merchandise. I'm sure there are plenty of us who get bits and pieces from many sources.

The only two I can think of are eBay and Land Rover itself.

Maybe check The Shopping Trolley - Australian Land Rover Owners and Marketplace Alerts - Australian Land Rover Owners on this forum for tips or browse over at Dave's Interesting Things for stuff related to AULRO.

    Cheers, Paul.
