    just maybe....

    I'm contemplating buying this:
RANGE ROVER 1987, Hi Line, 3.5 EFi, auto, 210,000km, roo bar, tow bar, LR tanks, twin spare wheel carriers, spotties, dual batts, mags

And repowering with chev, holden or ford v8. Install will be professionally done (not by me) Who's done it before and what sort of headaches are involved? eg blown diffs, axels, overheating etc.

My last rangie was a 90 3.9 lt 5sp, brilliant on and offroad (as you all know) but stupidly thirsty(23-28lt/100km) and underpowered considering fuel consumption. I figure that the bigger donk won't have to work as hard and should return similar or better "economy" with more grunt.

    Fire away

Micko - is there supposed to be a link to this vehicle?

'87 RRC HiLine was a great car - shouldn't have sold mine...

Have heard of small block V8 Chev's and 3.8L V6 Commodore motors going in without too much problem... maybe a transmission swap too?

Will watch this project with much interest, please post pics if/when you do.

    cheers, Paul.

No link Paul, just a brief descriptor of the car. I'm mainly just chasing others experience with similar projects.
    cheers

Thats kinda scarry figures - my 3.9 with ZF get 14-18 L/100km depending on the driving conditions - rather than going to the expense of getting repowered why not just renew/rebuild/stroke whats in it.

Guy I sold George (my rangie) about six months ago and replaced it with a NM Pajero Exceed as I needed something a bit more respectable for work. I've since lifted the paj 3 inches but it just aint the same, feels sloppy and tinny offroad in comparison. Plan now is to sell the Paj and get another Rangie and a Falcon wagon or similar for work.
I keep on hearing about 3.9's returning 14lt/100km but mine never got near it. Mind you I did love the sound of that donk working

You can achieve that on Highway runs ... no problems
It's the City cycles that run high numbers

sounds like a great idea anything is possible and i have found that this forum has a depth of knowledge that can solve most problems you may encounter. if you build it yourself you will get what you want and it will be your car go hard mate and good luck.

I have a '86 3.5 ZF auto $500 clunker - on LPG, and my wife hates that it is cheaper to run (fuel cost per km) than her 99 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5 V6 manual...
