Take the rear tail shaft off ... and go for a drive ... This test will reflect the circumstances that you described
It should operate drive to the front as per normal /// if it does // then it's not your Viscous at fault

I never really had the nose trying to come around to a point that it has been scary or completely uncontrolable?
Maybe my viscous is working well?
My bro has a D2 Auto, and lent it to me for a drive in the dunes ... So I found the steepest one to go up, and only got up half way .. Huge incline, real soft :)
Anyways ... Have to reverse it .. OK / Put it in neutral and coast down // Took foot off brake and "straight up" felt the front end move to the side :(
// STOP // OK ... try again in 1st gear forward .... and again "straight up" felt the front end move to the side :(
// STOP // OK ... so we are gonna have to put it in reverse gear and DRIVE it down :( (this should be interesting, I'm thinking) ;)
Now here's the drama .... You have to drive it in reverse gear backwards, to stop the front end from swinging around // The best part is the ABS /// When you want to slow down ... You can't .... cause the brake pedal refuses to lock up the wheels /// The modulator keeps kicking your foot off the pedal and you can't actually lock up the wheels in the soft sand to make it bog in and stop
Not funny when you have to do a sharp turn at the bottom of the dune .... in reverse .... to avoid going over & down the next sand ridge ;)
and now I found out since, that you can turn the ABS off
Luck-ely ... I have a RRC with no ABS :D

Hmmmm... does it light up on the dash or anything and how do you turn it back on again...?
Probably different to mine plus being a D2 its later anyway....
Worth a try tomorrow tho...
I have recently completed this conversion in my 94 Classic.THE L230 is a stronger transfer case especially if towing, however it is noisy in comparison, even having it reconditioned. You will need front tail shaft, quill shaft from auto, right mount, gear leaver and support bracket. You may need to check fr, & r diffs for planetery gear shaft wear if you have been running the car with the viscous coupling locked.A straight forward conversion , if you have all the parts.:)
