As far as I'm aware 76/77 was when power steering became available, my 76 didn't have it, but my father 77 did.
Hi folks.
Am looking at stepping into an early (2-door) Rangie as a resto/project (once i get it past the financial manager) and have a few questions.
When was power steering first available as standard on these?
I want to keep it as original as I can so would not be looking at any mods except - maybe - a long range tank or preferably sill tanks as it would be used as a weekend escape machine, etc. Any advice here?
Lastly - what type of pricing am i looking at? I would love as early a model as possible but am prepared to wait (save) for as long as it takes to get a decent one.
Cheers,
Juz

My 1st rangie didn't have power steering and I never found that to be a problem. I had it for many years and did a lot of miles. I even fitted a smaller diameter steering wheel.
Even though it was many years ago, I certainly remember giving much thought to that after a friend bought a later model with power steering.
IIRC they had more turns lock to lock compared to the power steer models.
Thanks again folks.
Yeah, i am not sure re the power steering whether it is that much of an issue, really, was more keen just to find out when it appeared. I think a mid-70s model is going to be cheaper once i start looking seriously but would love to find an early one if possible.

This one early enough? will even export it for you.
Unfortunatly the early 2doors are fetching high prices, even rotten ones.
YVB 150H Range Rover Classic - VELAR - PROTOTYPE No 7 on eBay (end time 12-Sep-09 14:28:01 BST)
Ha! Nice one!
Just finished reading Roger Crathorne's 'Born in Lode Lane' book and he mentioned the VELAR models a fair bit.
It would be nice but right-hand drive would be the go, of course.

Restorations can look good, or terrible. I have a customer that has slowly been upgrading/ restoring his 1975 Bahama Gold 2 door. The body was already in exceptional condition, and the list of mods includes; 1983 short throw LT95 gearbox, 1993 Disco1 3.5 engine, NEW() HIF6 SU carbs, 1997 Disco1 Serpentine belt timing case and ancilliaries, 1997 24 spline D1 diffs,(Rear ARB locker also) springs and swaybars. 4 bolt steering box conversion, Full leather trim in tan, rear upper tailgate ex 1991 RRC, wingmirrors from 1989 RRC, (Quarter-lights modded to fit mirrors) and Rossignol 5 spoke alloys and 235/70/16 Michelins. The vehicle also has EFI manifolds and Stainless system, and an ARB step bumper.
I think it is a very good, reliable and aesthetically pleasing resto, and makes it a fantastic daily driver.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
i have a 2 door and while the power steering is great it's very prone to leaking so watch out for leaks. They are very $$$$ to replace.
I believe that the models with no power steering had a different turning gear/ratio to compensate so I wouldn't worry too much about power steering or not.
price wise its like asking how much is a ford falcon. Buy one in good condition it'll cost you heaps more but buy a do-er upper and it'll cost you more in the long run.
Anyhow can be from a few hundred ($500) for a heap up $3500 for something thats been maintained and has extras, eg , roo bar, muddies, extra tank maybe lpg have a good look around. 2 doors are getting harder to come by but are still pretty cheap.
Now and again you see them for several thousand but the usually have big engines/lockers etc
have a good reaad on here re: 2 door known issues before you part with your cash.

Sorry for hijack.
JC,
My rangie is an 84, I like the quarter-lites for a couple of reasons (not for ventilation), so don't want to change to 85 or later doors.
But I don't like my stock wing mirrors, or the window frame in my sight line to left mirror.
I would like to fix these issues and would appreciate some info of what was done to fit the 89 mirrors and how it turned out. It isn't at the top of my list yet and one thought I had was to use a camera at the left mirror position.
