Perentie compliance plates

My E-type, 101 and Haflinger do not have compliance plates. When going through the registration process for the 101 I was told that commercial vehicles up to 1986 may not have had compliance plates but after 1986 all vehicles sold into Aust had to have a compliance plate.

I understand that Perenties are post 1986 so need a compliance plate. In another thread I asked how you go about getting a new compliance plate when one has been lost or is wrecked in a car accident - the general consensus was that it was not possible.

The bottom line is that your vehicle should have a plate hence the numptys at your registration authority referring this to the police as a possible rebirth - however logically common sense would have applied and registration rejected with advice on what is required to get it registered.

Maybe you need to go through a compliance process such as imported cars go through and you get a new compliance plate. When I first registered my Jaguar in 1984 there was discussion on whether a compliance plate was required but was decided it was needed - however if it did, a letter from Jaguar Rover Australia stating the vehicle complied with Aussie requirements would have been required - JRA was not happy to put their name on such a document but ultimately it did not matter.

Because I bought a Victorian Perentie (without Vic or NSW Blue Slip) I was super paranoid about getting it through Rego in NSW so I made a few calls before making the committment.

I finally got through to a decision maker/policy dude at NSW Roads and Maritime who made super clear that I shouldn't go near a Perentie without a fitted compliance plate unless I wanted the misery.

I then called AFM who said they might be able to help with a manufacturing certificate or something. After weighing up the options it was easier to just make 100% sure the plate was there in the first place.

Getting the blue slip and insurance in NSW wasn't quite as breezy as people made out. For whatever reason RMS dfidn't have a "code" for a 110 ute with 3.9l non-turbo diesel and neither did NRMA. In the end the process took 3 hours longer than it would for a normal car but they fixed it in the end. Roadworthiness wasn't the issue it was red tape.

Also: Being able to drive it unregistered from Vic to NSW was super easy. Just call Vic Roads with the Vin# and vehicle details and request an unregistered vehicle permit. $44 over the phone payment for a one way trip - origin to destination via the fastest route within a 4 day window.

I just registered mine in VIC after a bit of a hassle (even with a compliance plate). In spending a lot of time talking to Vicroads it seems that as it was a defence vehicle the VIN is deleted from the national database which requires the authority to reinstate the VIN on the database. This is apparently the process (according to the bloke from Vicroads) that is used for police and witness protection related vehicles to stop any link from the plate to the individual.

I had a Monty Python moment:

"your vehicle doesn't exist"
"yes, it does, it is parked outside"
"no it isn't, it doesn't exist"...

but after three visits to Vicroads they accepted that the vehicle existed and loaded it onto the VIN database.

Sorry for delay
Was on a cruise in Caribbean last week and now in Moscow.

It was resolved the week before the cruise so took a while, but resolved okay it was.
The simple fix was a new "surrogate" chassis number was given and stamped onto the chassis and then went thru rego with a breeze.

I had a very pleasant experience registering my 6x6.
The roadworthy was issued no problems. A few broken and worn bits had to be replaced.
The only issue Vicroads had was what to register as. The tandem axles suggested "heavy rigid" but the GVM suggested "light rigid". When I advised them that, because the axles were less than a metre apart centre to centre, it is considered to be one axle for registration purposes, they confirmed this with the manager and accepted any further information I gave as fact.
It was a breeze. The Vicroads people I dealt with were excellent.

These registration dept. problems are similar to what I went through to correct the incorrect rego details for my Series 3 Lightweight, it was regoed in Qld as a 1984 model 4cylinder Diesel (LWB):) but it was in fact a 1980 model SWB 2.25ltre Petrol, when presented to Transport Dept,they couldn't find the Chassis No under the pommie tar like chassis protectorant,so refused,they called one of their Inspectors,he came out looked and then spotted the Nomenclature plate riveted to the dash/firewall and stated "just put all that down it is Military and will be correct" :D

So I now have a correctly registered 1980 Petrol Landrover Series 3 SWB Air Portable ;)

For mine it was the chassis number. I had the VIN plate there. You might be correct as mine did have a Tenix Refurb where it appears everything was replaced. Any it's registered. :)
