You get a heck of a lot of what? I have an '89 FFR, an '85 County 110 and a Series 2a. Sorry to break it to you, the FFR is closer to a Series 2a, the County closer to a Defender, and the County is cheaper. You don't get a whole lot of much with an ex-army 110. A robust base vehicle, yes (same as my County). A great blank canvas, sure. But nothing else. Not even a cigarette lighter socket.

By the time you bring the conveniances and technical specs of an army 110 up to the level of a County or Defender, you'd have spent another 6 or 7 grand I reckon, more if you paid someone to modify it for you. Heck, power steering alone is a few thousand if professionally done, or about a thousand in parts. Then there is better suited coil springs, a roof, stereo, door locks, keyed ignition, centre console, larger fuel tank, NVH insulation, potentially an aircon...there's a lot to do, if those things are important to you.

I love my FFR, once a few more alterations are made it'll suit me just nicely and am definitely not selling it but geez there are some blinkered view points around.

Well I owned a LWB '65 Series 2A and performance wise I struggle to see the similarity. My '65 was absolutely gutless, broke axles just looking at a gutter, couldn't handle any sort of load and you needed a week to drive between cities, it seemed to take forever crawling up every hill in 2nd gear and I used to pray to see the next 10km sign !!!!

I didn't buy the Perentie to recreate a commercial version .. I wanted a damm simple, robust and reliable machine that performed with a decent load. I have owned 2 quite luxurious Pajero Exceeds, but cannot justify another $65k 4wd as I head into retirement in a couple of years. No probs justifying the Perentie, especially one that's mechanically (according to KLR) in as good as nick as this one, drive a Corolla during the day and get to have fun with this on the weekends plus its the workhorse on my small acreage. Only major mod I lashed out on was power steering and even then I tried living without that but age has got me :(:( and that certainly wasn't $3k as you quoted.

So bag for buck, winch, Izuzu engine, for towing, 4wd capability, highway cruising at 100kph (actually she hums along at 110kph without any effort), and importantly fun, she does for my needs, and yes as you point out I may be one of those heavily blinkered people .. but I am happy with my Perentie and its cost, so will continue to live in my fantasy world ;);)

I guess there are some blinkered view points - those are some pretty unnecessary things for me - Power steering? NVH? its a 25yo ex-mil vehicle, people arent buying them expecting luxury. They have been fine for 25 years without those things.. And theres enough 'blinkered view pointed people' who seem to be dictating a strong enough market demand for these :p

2nd hand county - Find one thats log book maintained, hasnt been modified with who-knows-what by all its 15 civvie owners over the years and has as low km .. oh dang, there goes the price - flying past :)

2nd hand perentie - Most come with full logbooks, meticulously maintained, cleaned after every use, gal chassis so little rust to worry about - only bulkhead/doors. Simple donk/running gear, less to go wrong with no hydraulic steering, a/c seals drying out, roof can come off in 15m, roof can go back on in .. yeh the roof can go back on lets leave it at that :D. Security? It has its looks for that :twisted: But keyed ignition/doorlocks are a $30 part, and when you are outlaying $5k+ on one of these, $30 is nothing. Sure it has a unique paintjob but what county/older defender doesnt have entirely faded decals?

performance wise, it leaves my series in the dust, i mean its slow compared to my last non-land rover based cars, but feels like a rocketship compared to series, and has the discs to slow it down

wanted luxuries not yet purchased;
new canopy, being one of the cheaper ones released mines really old, and I knew I was going to need to spend $1650 on a canopy and i was ok with that
a set of 2nd hand off-road tyres maybe?

happy as with my purchase, saving for another one perhaps..

I drive them at work and knowing how they get driven I would not pay the sort of prices that either the auctions, dealers or private sellers are asking.
